ing efficiency and economy of opera

cific motive power experts. They will

handling of heavier trains.

These are to be used in fast passen
ger service over mountain divisions
and on exceptionally long runs.

of the "4-(i-2" type of passenger en
gine, similar to those built hi 192 1
for use on the iilt Lake I M vision,
which have proved so efficient in
making the run of 5:t(i miles between
Ogden, t'tah. and Sparks, Nevada.
The new mountain type passenger
locomotives are heavier and more
powerful than any passenger loco
motive now used by tho Soul hern
Pacific. They have a tractive, or pull
ing power of 57,510 pounds wiLhout
the auxiliary booster engine and t!7,
6tiU pounds with the booster. The to
tal weight of engine and tender Is
approximately 572,:tuo pounds, lenght
over all, 97 feet, til Inches; height,
16 feet, li inches; driving wheels
73i inches in diameter.
Tho booster engine Is a separate
two-cylinder steam engine geared to
axle of trailing truck wheels for the
purposo of assisting main engine in
bundling trains, both in sturting and
on heavy grades. It is cut out as soon
as the train attatna a speed of about
15 miles an hour.
The "4-0-2" typo passenger loco

efficient and easiest riding engines
