A strike this year was avoided and produc tion held on praeticully a record basis. In fact, wo have pro duced more coal to date than was brought to the surface during the entire 12 months of 1022, the exact figure for last year being 4O7.SM.00O tons. Incidentally, the output this year has been exceeded only once In the history of this country: that was In litis, when 67H.3S5,OUO tons were produced. It Is not surprising in view of current figures that com mercial stocks of bituminous coal havo jumped. Statistics show that on September 1. stocks were esti mated at aii. Ooo.ono tons, or the highest volume since April, 1022.
