Escape In Iog Flume Through
Forest Fire.
Ever ride down a timber flume?
To drift along, high up among
the mountain tree tops, on a log
that offers rather insecure footing,
is an exciting experience. But to
try the same stunt with the trestle
work of the flume on fire and all
the tree tops dropping red hot sparks
and Marguerite de la Motte, who
tried it during the filming of "Scars
of Jealousy," Thomas II. Ince's latest
production, bear witness that the ex
perience is too thrilling for repetition-

lAJabamn, a timber flume was con
r;structed by Ince technicians in a
If thieklv wooded tract of the his-h
Sierras in Northern California. With
the assistance of some lumber jacks
who had been clearing out a section
of a forest reserve for the govern
ment, the flume was built so that
it not only would float logs hut also
would be safe for the use of Lloyd
Hughes and Marguerite de la Motte,
who, in the story, make a spectacular
escape from a fire trap by float
ing down such a flume,

Director Lambert Hillyer insisted
on trying it out before he -would
allow the actors in his company to
do the stunt. Using his assistant,

So did Hillyer. Roberts, when he
came to, wus gasping for breath in
the river below where Hillyer had
dropped him. Three times Hillyer
tried to show his stars just how
the scene should be done, and each
time he dropped Roberts into the
river below. The forth time proved
successful, and Hughe and iMiss de
la Motte took the places of the di
rector nnd his assistant. .
The underbrush near the flume
was fired before the cameras start
ed .grinding, and by the time the
log-riders hail neared the end of the
flume the trestle was blazing and
all the trees crackling and snapping
with flame. Hughes, throwing Miss
de la Motte' into the river below,
literally leaped for his life, nnd the
cameras caught one of the host
"thrillers" ever filmed-
"Scars of Jealousy" will be shown
nt the Star theatre Thursday audi
Friday.
