It is evident that Gasnier, who directed "Daughters of the iRieh," knows the screen value of a virile and absorbing story- His latest pro duction not only fulfills this story's requiiements, but is one of the most lavishly staged ever filmed as an Al Lichtmnn nttraction. In quality of entertainment, "Daughters of the Rich" even sur passes those two previous Gasnier productions "Rich lien's Wives" and "Poor Men's Wives." The novel by Edgar Sultus, adapted for the screen by Olga I'nntzlau, is replete with melodramatic action of the higher class. Intriguing characters lead to Russia, France and the Orient, providing scenes of unusuaj beauty, gorgeous costuming and thrilling ac tion. Not only is the story filled with action but its human appeal offers to all classes of theatre-goers entertainment of a high order. B. P. Schulberg has chosen an un usually fine cast for "Daughters of the Rich." Gaston Glass, who scored such a 'personal success in "The Hero" is cast in a still more sym pathetic role in this picture. The youthful Glass, since he made his first big success in "Humorcsque," has come to the fore rapidly, attract ing as many theatre-goers as stars' koiio Karl imiri- Kuiwora nn the' screen. Ethel Shannon, recently signed on a long contract by Schulberg is more than fulfilling the faith placed in her ability. In this, her first large production, she shows remarkable versatility for so young a player, and makes an auspicious beginning of what promises to be a successful career. Stuart Holmes, the rogue of many silversheet dramas, discards villainy and gives a clear-cut chaiacterization to the role of a Russian noble. Mir iam Cooper, a local favorite of long standing, is sweet and appealing in the most sympathetic role ol me storv. As an American heiress, beatiful Ruth Clifford displays a be wildering wardrobe. Miss Clifford s work, always genuinely sincere, is unusually convincing here. Fighting Star Theatre Real Life Characters in "The Custard Cup" The author of "The Custard Cup," produced by William Fox, has an ac curate and sympathetic understand ing of human nature and hasfilled her story with kindly feeling and the optimism that makes for happi ness and contentment. The picture, which will be shown at the Star Theatre Wednesday only, was direc ted by Herbert Brenon and features Mary Carr. It contains a collection of characters that will readily ' be recognized as having been taken from life. Dweller for the most part, of a small section of the city, known as "Custard Court, ' the petty jealous ies, kindliness and underlying strat um of crime and dishonesty that is to be found in the world at large are all enacted here wicn the same intensity, and form a drama that is at once vital, humorous and absorb-'"k- . .... ...
