A Brand New
Pair of Shoes
The First Day
of School
If Betty Mae and Bobby Jr. don't have anything else
new for the first day of school, there simply must be a
new pair of shoes, that's all. A pair of our broad-toed
cocoa-brown shoes with rubber heels will delight any
youngster. Or there are any number of comfy lasts and
colors the children like, for both girls and boys. Bring
them in and we'll fit them perfectly.

Stealthv Robber Fails

NORTH POWDER, August G. 'A
rather peculiar action by some ma
rauder was experienced by the mem
bers of Mrs. Mabel Laughlin's fam
ily, last Spnday morning. A stranger
or an unknown person entered by
breaking a front room window, pass
ing through the house, and leaving
by the back door. Nothing was tak
en so robbery was not the motive
and the only explanation possible is
that an euemy wanted to do damage
to the place, or else a friend tried
to play a joke on the family- If it
was the latter, the funny person cer
tainty had an unusual idea of what
humor is.
None of the inmates of the home
heard the marauder, but neighbors,
the Walter McGrath family, living
across the street, saw the party and
heard the crash of breaking glass,
and heard the door slam. They pre
sumed some member of the Laughlin
household was ahout, and paid no
attention to the incident.

Questions and Answers

Cream Puffs
Cook cupful fat with 1 cupful boiling water
until fat Is melted, then aild 1 cupful flour
which has been sifted with Vj teaspoon salt.
Add flour all at once to prevent mixture lump

not stick to the sides of the pan. Remove
from fire and add 4 egps, one at a time, beating
well after the addition of each. After last egg
Is added continue beating until mixture does
not string when a' fork is drawn through it.
Bake on baking sheet or inverted pie or cako
tins. Prop by teaspoonfuls or tablespoonfuls,
depending on size wnnled. Bake in moderate
oven 30 to 45 minutes, increasing heat first fif
teen or twenty minutes then rapidly decreas
ing until oven Is almost cold. When cold, slit
one side of puff open nml fill with cream tilling
or whipped Carnation Milk.
In these lessons it has been possible to
touch on only a few of the uses tor Carna
tion Milk, and in this column I have tried
to answer such quest inns its seemed of
most interest to my correspondent.
Remember that Carnation Milk is just
pure, rich milk "from contented eows.V re
duced in bulk for your convenience. I'sed
us it comes from the can it is richer than
ordinary milk and imparts a liner flavor
to many foods. When diluted to the con
sistency of ordinary milk, its economy is
apparent. '
