even fifteen years hence, when Ja
pan may be even unofficially allied
with Germany. The present nego
tiations are of a purely commercial
character, and while de jure recog
nition by Japan of Moscow may be
one of the results of the conference
Japan has no idea of looking to
ward an alliance."
Claims that these three potentially
great nations might be looking to
the day when thev would have a do-
litical perhaps a military alliance
.were urged for many reasons, chief
among these being the idea tlu
militarism as practiced in' Germany
has had a certain vogue in Japan,
that certain natural characteristics
are similar and .that a combination!
of the three would be a strong mili
tary argument against any other
combination of powers in the future.
Further, it was brought out that
Germany is the cultural home of
many Japanese; that Viscount Goto,
chief advocate of Soviet Russia an
admirer of Germany was himself
educate in Germany and that many
Japanese will always owe Germany
a debt for what Germany did in the
way of educating young Japanese
in science and in other studies.
It isi a fact that the German Em
bassy in Tokio has watched the pre
liminary negotiations between Tokio
and Moscow with much interest, and
some assert that Ambassador Solf,
Berlin's 'representative at the Imper
ial Court in Tokio and perhaps the
strongest figure in the entire Diplo
matic Corps, was constantly in touch
with feeling throughout Japan to
ward Germany and Russia, the idea
of Ambassador Solf's interest being
the possibility of future political de
velopment between the three nations.

claim and one cjuite probably bear
ing no relation to the claim whntso'
ever was the

national Committee, Y. M. C. A
which originated the observance in

tee continues to lead its promotion.
The change from the week of Lin
coln s Birthday, used lor the pur
pose ot the observance until this
year, has been made in response to
the desire of national and interna
tional Sunday School organizations
The President's letter follows:
"My attention has been called to
the National Father and Son Move
ment, which is to be launched during
National Father and Son Week, No
vember 11-18. It is a great pleasure
for me to recommend this movement,
which has as its objective to draw
togetner m a more intimate way the
fathers and sons of America, and to
strengthen and develop this rela
tionship. "The success of this movement
during the past years has won for
it a distinct place. Since the move
ment has become world-wide in char
acter, it is most fitting that it cen
ter around the date of world-wide
