Are We Active? , This morning, before seven o'clock, the editor of the Even ing Observer lined up in u local eating house for breakfast when in came h bunch of tourists. They were motorists who knew what it means to be on the road. "Good morning," said all members of the party to everyone in the place. liefore: the, breakfast had finished the man spoke to a few people saying- his name was "Loelller," that ho was a clothier from Grand Junction, Colorado, and that his town was quite well pleased with George Garratt who formerly lived in La Grande but who is now city manager of Grande Junction. liefore leaving Mr. Loefler paid u high tribute to the Oregon Trail saying he would take no other route to California and in sisting that the entire country agreed with him in this. As the party entered their machine to journey on, one of thb men hastily alighted and entered the restaurant with a bunch of Grand Junction literature. As he handed it out to dill'erent ones he said, "we like your country wonderfully well for you have li fine country, but wont you study up a bit about Grand Junction mid when you have an opportunity come back and see us?" Now, for trim, dignified boosting we contend that fel low LocU'lcr und his party have got, the world cheated. As the pur of their Premier ear died away we could but wondor if Ln Grande people were playing the tourist game in the proper man ner. Are we active '! .. But the manner of his death means little to the world. The fact that he has been bumped oft and is no longer a figure in Old Mexico is the chief thing of interest. So long as Villa lived he k-im feared.''-llfe'phiyed 4.he game of politic accofrdtng to the old rules, which was to make them fear you rather than love you. Whilo Mexico ostensibly has been going on without Villa, yet he has been a factor in everything that the southein country hits done of late. Nestling in his large ranch he appeared to be lost to the worjd, yet he was of great importance in. every ques tion of state, With his body cold In death hlexican leaders can now step out without fear and advance some statesmanship ideas for the up building of that great country and for the re-establishing of permanent relations. Villa was a plain outlaw a bandit with no regard for law or order, with a desire to incite revolt and treason. lie was an ad vocate of the burning torch, the disregarding of law. lie may have had his good qualities, too, but certainly he has been a miirhtv bad man for Mexico. His active career has set Mexico j back fifty years in the procession of civilization. Asking "tJrneey One evening the young minisler, who had seemed rather attracted by "Dig Sinter" (i-mee, was dining with I he family. "Utile Sinter" was talk ing rapidly when the visitor was about to ask the blessing. Turning to the child, he said in a tone of mild reproof: "Laura, T am going to usk grace." ,. 'Well, It's about time," answered "Little Sister" in an equally reproving lone. "We've been expecting you to do It for a year, and slut has, loo." i Airtcu Topics i .mmAMi'-'jr. ! in : About Wrist Tins w Junius went .into a local res taurant the other day ami dined. King Uing and Queen Anne hold Cove by the throat these diiys. The cherry is the subject of conversation, the cause of constant work and the returns are very gratifying. Campers fill the. streets, tents are everywhere, the snort of the Ford without muffler warns the pedestrian to hunt cover for the cherry pickers have right-of-way and they swing up and down the streets of Cove with as much ease as mining men of GoldhYld ever display ed when the Little Florence mine was giving up her ore and send ing the stocks skyrocketing on the exchange. Cove is at herself this year and no mistake. The Stackland boys are busier than the proverbial eranlorry merchants caring for their cherries, packing fancy boxes in the Stackland packing house. The Co-operative packing house is working a number of people and everywhere there is energy and hustle. John Dean, a large grower and dealer in cherries, is buying all that is offered at nine cents a pound and he is kept mighty I usy handling the dill'erent deals each day. Providence has blest Cove in many ways this season. Tn the first place she has a noord breaking crop; secondly, the price is higher than a Tom Cat's back in the dead hour of night, and third, nature is ripening the lowland cherries first and holding back the cherries on the foothills which gives the pickers a long campaign of work and makes them happy. When the tired day sinks into the arms of restful night in different parts of Cove one can hear the contented workers sing ing Bongs and smell the pipe smoker's tobacco us he sends the curling smoke into the night air resting and smoking after the day's work is done. Young people full of pep and ginger seek the dance hall"or the swimming tank, and joy is uneonfined in Cove during the cherry picking season.
