University of Texas May Become Rich Through Oil lly AfwoclaU-rt Prom) ArRTlN, Tex., July IS, Httitlents and officials of the University of Texas who for several years have dreamed of extensive improvements for the school nmy have their dream fulfilled by the magic of oil- A $(1,000,000 improvement program ban hen outlined for some time. The board of regents had taken steps to obtain Iouiih for the improvement., but it was not until a few weekx ago that hope developed for other sources of revenue. It is admitted by university of ficials that should a producing oil field be opened on the school's lands in West Texnrt it probnbly would be one of the richest schools in the na tion. Reports of a gusher in Reagan county were made recently, but it re mains for the iieul to be proven. University officials nre 'reluctant to express themselves regarding the probable income of the school tromi the field. On returning from an in- j spection of the Santa Rita wellj which has caused much discussion,! Dr. J. A. 'Udden, head of the uni versity geology department, de clared that prospects are favorable for a producer, although he would not hazard a guess as to the value of the field. 'AH permits on the uni versity block have been taken up as a result of the Santa Rita prospects. The slate university holds title to 72 sections of land in the Reagan county district. The income from the land under state law, is used for pes- manent improvements, me state legislature probably would mane pro vision for other uses in case a large income is derived.
