Monday, July 16, 1923 THE LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER PAGE SEVEN WILL AUCTION GEARHART LOTS AUTO ACCIDENTS JUMPED 42 I'ER CTNT IN 3 YEARS The most interesting development ' of the past week in real estate circles is the announcement of an unre served auction na!o of beach resort home sites at Gcurhart By the Sea. The sale is scheduled to take place at Gcurhart on Saturday. August 11th and the officials of the Gcarhart Fark Company, owners and develop ers of Cearhart, announce that each lot offered will be sold to the high est bidder without reservations. Marketing of homo sites by the auction method in and around Port land is no longer in the experimental stage since several large uuctions have been conducted in the past three years, anionj; them being Lau relhurst. Piedmont and Mayhew Park properties, all of which were conducted by Barry & Austin, who introduced this method of selling in Oregon and who will conduct the forthcoming sale at ticurharL The sale of Gearhart lots is of particular interest because of the character of the property involved and again on account of tho rapid de velopment now going on and con templated at tiearliart. The mag nificent $:i(JO,OUO hotel is undeniably the finest Mcacli Kcsort Hotel on the Pacific and has just 'been com pleted at Gcarhart, thereby provid ing a much needed rendcvuus foe the people of the northwest. . The hotel is equipped with every conceivable convenience and most elaborately fur nished and surpasses anything of its kind in this part of the country. This enterprise, promoted by some of 1'ortlands most prominent citi zens, is uu assurance that Gearhart is on the threshold of unprecedented activity anil now that the Gcaihart Park Company has authorized an un reserved sale of part of Us huhlings, it is to be expected that considerable building activity will be witnessed at Gearhart in the immediate future. The purpose of the sale, as- stated by an official of the selling company, is to distribute as many lots as pos sible among individual homo builders who will build and live at Gearhart and for this reason, in spite of the fact that it is to bo a sacrifice sale, the selling company is offering ex- cecdingly easy terms to encourage rapid development at this beautiful beach resort. "Prices will be no con sideration ut the auction and terms as low as iplOX'O a month are being offered, thereby making it possible for all to participate in the joy of a summer cottage by the sea." Deeds anil title policies will be issued by the Title & Trust Company of Port land and arrangements have also been made with the Title & Trust Company to execute bids for intend ing purchasers who might not be able to attend the sale in person. An attractive illustrated book-map giv ing full description of the property and tho terms of sale has been pre pared and can be. obtained upon ap plication at the office of Barry & Austin .in the Chamber of Commerce Building, Portland. (lty Associated Press) NEW YORK, July 13. Lax sup ervision of motor vehicle drivers and the resultant increase of 42 per cent in the automobile death rate during the past three years, is due to the fact that the majority of state legislators are from rural dis trict!) where strict examination and registration of drivers is not a vital matter, according to a report sub mitted by William J. Cox. traffic ac cident research engineer, to the Na tional Bureau of Casualty and Sure ty Underwriters. There were 14,000 deaths from motor accidents last year, he said. After a thorough investigation of tne problem, and a careful examina tion of the records of some 300.000 accidents, Mr- Cox has prepared a table showing that registration and examination of all drivers is the only method of stopping the rising num ber of traffic casualties. In Maryland, Massachusetts ami Connecticut, where strict supervision of drivers is maintained, casualties have fallen off i per cent, while in creasing 42 per cent over the coun try. According to IMr. Cox' figures, there would have been 4,300 fewer deaths from outomobilcs in 1022 had the percentage of these three states been universal. "Only seven states renuire the ex amination of all motor vehicle opera tors," said tho report, "while 35 stales require only chauffeurs to be licensed, and many of these are never examined. An automobile driver's li cense must ibe something to be ac quired through merit, and not through the payment of half a dollar." How Hot Is Lightning? (Ily Associated l'ress) BERLIN, July 14. The question of the degree of heat germinated by lightning has been agitated recently in German scientific circles because of the effect, observed after electrical storms, of lightning on the tips of lightning rods. It was found that a platinum tip melted on being struck. Since the melting-point of platinum Is variously fixed at 1,7(10 to 1.800 degree centll- grude. it was clear that tile lightning's heat exceeded that temperature. La ter an instanco developed in which an iridium tip was melted by a sti-oko. Tho melting-point of this metal Is said to be 2,000 degrees centrigrude. r hot? fHAFED by rash Of Itching skin?
