Saturday, July 7, 1923. THE LA' GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER PAGE SEVEN 1 m 'Mr Railroads Should Be Good Customers Now J WELLESLTY HILLS, Mass., July C. Roper W. Babson is optimistic ever the condition of the railroads, even though ho is not bullish on railroad stocks. He insists that the railronds are making more money than they have made for years and that business should Ret the bene fit of this money before long. Mr. Salmon's authorized statement is as follcws: "Whatever may happen to the stock market, the fact, nevertheless, remains that the railroads are mak t iri money, in fact more money than )fhey havo made for years. The two hundred leading roads should report for the last month, for which we have available figures, about ?550, 000,000 gross ccinpareil with about $150,000,000 for the .corresponding month of last year, thus showing an increase of over a hundred million. ....; up by operating expenses, but about, forty million is left as an increase of Two thirds of this has been net. During the nicnth of May. 1923, 4,87:1,427 freight cars were loaded compared with 3,481,1)83 cars during May, 1022. The loading fig ures for June show a greater in- crease. Truly this is remarkable and a similiar situation has seldom hap pened before in the ruilroad world. This means tlu't over a million freight cars are being loaded a week. It therefore shows that when the present area of business readjust ment is completed and we are ready to enter a period of real prosperity, the railroads are liable to break down as they will be unabje to cave for the country's business. One won ders if the Interstate Commerce Commission or the politicians of the country realize this serious condition. The number c.f freight cars should be increased as the normal line of the Babsonchart runs upward. The car loadings naturally fluctuate with the hills and valleys of the chart, but the number of freight cars in existence should increase as the nor mal line of the chart increases. "This improvement in the railroad situation has developed without any special reasons. The country has been enjoying for the past few months, a small intermediate area of prosperity. As this was not a real area of prosperity, one can readily imagine what will happen when the real area of prosperity comes Fur thermore, these earnings have come about during a period of very bad weather conditions. Railroad men tell me that this is the worst spring, from a ruilroad point of view, that the railroads have ever experienced. Even during April, the northern part of tho country had severe snow storms, while the southern part suf fered continually frcm floods. The . cold weather over the entire country, during April and May, greatly re tarded buying. Of course, the rail roads had an increase in rates, but this increase took place more than a year ago. There has been a de crease in rates and an increase in . wages since the blanket increase two years ago. On July first, last year, the Interstate Commerce ' Commis sion put into effect a cut of 10 per cent cn most commodities except grain, which was cut 1111 per cent January 1, 1022. In addition to this, there have been many other reduc tions of rates. When comparing the net earnings of the railroads with four years ago, we must allow for the increase of rates; but the forty million dollars a month increase in net earnings, which the railroads are : & ,-fti$ ",!sil 'm'1' 6 ftr2t1 la. 4ranl liSf I PHI fee (Sit fewfWWO i nnnooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Reynolds and Zimmerman Funeral Service Parlor, Licensed Embalmer, Ambulance Service. Leighton's 'Welding & Machine Works now making, compared with a year ago has developed with a decrease in rates. "Railroad stocks usually go with the market irrespective of the earn ings. When we are in a bull mar ket, all stocks go up; anil when we are in a bear market, nil stocks go down, irrespective of merit, although the better stocks go dc.wn less than the poor ones. Therefore, I do not wish to say anything relative to the future action of railroad securities on the stock exchange. I do, how ever, wish to emphasize that the railroads aro having about forty mil lion dollars a month more to spend for labor, equipment, and supplies than they had at this time last year. When one takes into consideration the increased maintenance charges, this means that the railroads should have this year five hundred million dollars more to spend than they had ?st er- . ,Seven elKhths . f thl a"0"1' VnVL?eL U?E!r..J. cannot make the bears see this. They point only tci politicians and talk pnnstnntlv that an attempt will be made to have congress persecute the railroads next year. Probably such an attempt will be made, but this is no reason why our congressmen and legislators will be so short-sighted as to pass any detrimental legislation. "The railroads are not perfect In the past they made a great many mistakes which were unexcusable. Their attitude toward the public was medieval and wrong. Ihese condit ions are now greatly changed. Al though the roads are net yet per fect, it must be admitted that they are now trying to do what is right. SULPHUR SOOTHES UGLY.ITCHINOSKIN The Flrtt Application Makes . What is the car's reputation for satisfactory service after the first year? After the second? And after the third and fourth? These considerations, in the final analysis, are the true basis of economy in motoring. And it is this attribute of long life to which Dodge Brothers Motor Car owes its chief claim upon the unalterable loyalty of its owners. I I Ked L V ;,;t..'V7:,'-.
