THE LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER PAGE, SEVEN The Old Pioneers They have come up from the valley, und from tho mountains down, They are gathered from tho country, from ctty and from town. They came to awup reminiscences of time no on the wane, Of the anxious months of (lunger, of "the trip across the plains." , Their ranks are setting thinner, and their forma are bending low. Their eye are growing dimmer and their locks are whits as snow. Give them every comtort, tho they carry well their years, They are grand old men and women, these "Old Pioneers.", It was they who blazed the trails to this Empire of the West. Their noble "works do follow them," they're entitled ko the best. They forded streams and cut the rouds to the beautiful Grande Konde, The fairest and most fertilu vulu that on the trail was found And now their children multiply and ride In handsome style, ' I "Go It ten miles an hour," while the old folks make a mile.' But the old ftolks are contented In their declining years, lney are still tlio Bamo brave noble "Old Pioneers." ' AlXet the Until U their years of annual reunion continue over on, the lust old rtlKrim anions them all la tfone, ' They have sown the sugar beet where the cautaa once did grow, 'And tho palace car now follows the trail the pack mule used to go, The schoolhouse now takes the place of the Indian "Wlckeyup," . And they who wrought the change deservo the "Golden Cup," Scatter flowers in their pathway, adown declining years, . They are grand old men and women, theso "Old Pioneers." ' The starry Hag of freedom waving over Oregon Waa planted by the Pioneers, grandly moving on. No trouble ever daunted them, these "Old Tenderfeet," They were "up and at It" early, often with scanty faro to cat. 1 Brave men then were brothers, and brave women sisters too, - Honor and respect them, ye who dangers never new. Generations have been coining, aye will come for years. In the westward beaten pathway of these "Old Pioneers." - - .; Let these annual reunions sacred ever be, ' "' They wilt Boon get along without either you or me;. .. Hut their children und their children's children will still coma and go. Like tho forest flowers of summer, or winter's driven snow. "district around Culexica, California,' sent a crate of delicious canteloupes to his family here this week. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Cooper, un son Itobert,. returned to La Grando last Suturdtty after spending several daya at tho W. A. Winters home. Mr. Cooper's mother also accompanied them. - t . Mr. and Mrs. Kcrney Jones arc recurving congratulations on the birth of a daughter last Saturday morning ut the Grande Uonde hospital. The young, lady weighed seven and a half pounds, and has been named Esther Mnurinv (The above poem was written by E. S. McComas, an early day news ' papcrman and writer of Union county. He dedicated this poem to the pioneers at their first orgunlzed meeting- when General John H. Tho usuul bountiful moul was served at noon and u program of interesting numbers was given during tho afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Parsons are the parents of a baby daughter born Monday evening at their home on Cricket Flat. James Gekeler returned home this morning from a several days' visit with friends iu the Vulloy, Tho Elgin Odd Fellows and Itebek- uhs were host and hostewes Friday and Saturday to the lodges of the County. Tho convention was very en joyable und Elgin was victorious in winning three of tho thu prizes of fered. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Park of Sum- merville called at tho Lynn Hill home while in town to atend thu Kebekah meeting. - Among those from Elgin who are attending? Ahe-yiienguc Institute ut Wallowa lake are: Mr. Fred Hall and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Zeno Weiss, und Ernest Weiss. j Mrs. Fred Hall's mother, Mrs. fruikuhank, is spending tills week lu town. Nor ninny members of the locnl K. of P. lodge attended the convention at -Joseph last Monday. Ho much rainy weather had discouraged many who hud planned to attend. Mr. and Mrs. Hob Ijuio have moved from Portland to Coer d'Alene Idaho where Mr. l,:mo holds a position In . box factory. They were 'residents of Elgin for u number of years. Ono of tho most enjoyable social events of the month ttus the dinner given Tuesday by Mrs. V. -F. Weiss. It was primarily a birthday celebration for Doctor and Mrs. Brownell but also gave oppor tunity' for renewing of acquaintances with Mrs. Zeno Weiss who was form erly nu Elgin girl. Tho invitation list included those, who remain of the pioneers of the Elgin Methodist Church, Dr. and Mrs. Brownell, Mrj. Sarali Tuttle, and Mrs. Elizabeth Gal loway. Others were' He v. and Mrs. W. A.- Winters, present pastor of tho church. Key and Mrs. H. L. Willis, Mrs. Carpenter, mother of Mrs. Win ters, Mrs. Hawkins, sister of Mrs. Drownell. Places were laid for twelve' The color scheme was yellow, and white with touches of red in the ros es. iTlie center of interest was In the great birthday cake which held the place of honor on the table. ' Co vered with white Icing and decorated with garlands of yellow rose-buds. It was indeed beautiful. Upon tho up per surface of the top was inscribed tho date "June, 1923."
