Hondo Valley was new and Eastern

credit for the issue, and the write-up
of tho Oregon Trail that is soon to
be dedicated; of the progress that has
been made since the first train of Ore
gon pioneers made their way across
the Blue mountains almost a century
ago. Little did they dream that there
would be built a road over these
mountains that would be one of the
wonders or lhe world. A rond that
Is almost finished, and it will be a
pleasure to the auto driver, as he can
start from here in high gear and
without changing gears can in a few
hours he over In tho beautiful Grunde
Konde valley and just as easily cross
over to the west , side of the Blue
mountains where ha can view the
Umatilla valley, the garden spot of
the world for wheat..

tho mists of things forgotten.
As 1 read, I becumo Interested In
my mind's eyo I followed tho trull of
tho pioneers to whom wo owe uu Im
perishable debt of gratitude, and
watched their unequal strugglo as
ihey fought to subdue tho untamed
wlldernesu und spread tho benign In
fluence of civilization over a land of

La Grunde Evening Observer lust,
night at home, I thought that I had
been sent a belated copy of the New
ear Oregonlun. When I began to
look through the paper I was struck
with the likeness to the Oregonlun.
I'he freshness, beauty und strength of
the writings, with the rare mechani
cal skill In the make up of the paper.
and Its general appearance rival even
the Oregonlun. Of course I had
heard of La Grande and knew It was
a thriving Utile community, but I was
not prepared to receive a newspaper
of metropolitan size and excellence.
My interest Increased as I turned Us
many page-, and I laid the paper
by, surprised and gratified that such
a paper could be published In other
than a large city. You have honored
yourself, your paper and your com
