Mr Garrick Objects Disagreeing entirely with the Evening Observer's editorial of a few evenings ago wherein we (state the crime wave is due to a "flaw in-the home," L. Garrick, one of La Grande's able writers, has nddres'sed a letter to the editor of this newspaper saying, "your article headed a 'J'Vy. in the Home' is an unmerited and an erroneous charge, liv 'other words, it is a false accusation whereby you try. to make the parents guilty of the child's crime. By so iloing you only attempt to throw dust in the eyes of the public ivhile you igiiorantly or wilfully shelter the real source of crime, tyiz. the commercialized movie, where the young mind is conupted and every form of crime is learned from disobedience to murder. The movie ads in any newspaper is a covering of the eyes to all their alomiiiaUons." Now that Mi'. Garriek has unburdened himself of long pent-up spleen against the moving pictures, perhaps he will recall that in times when the American home functioned and obedience of chil dren was a fact, had there been such a thing in the community as bad pictures parents would have prohibited children attending them and that would have been the end. The livening Observer does not agree with Mr. Garrick that the "movies" as a whole are bad. We do say, and have repeatedly said that the moving pic ture industry must get away from the crime and lustful pictures. Not only did wo say so, but the entire country said so', and as n result there are few pictures shown now that arc of a revolting , nature. On the other hand, the moving picture of high order is a fine thing for any child, or adult either, for in many instance:; such pictures teach high ideals, better citizenship. Mr. Garrick's argument against the movies is not germaine to the question before the house, and the Observer docs not rec;.nt in the least when we say that the children are not to blame in most instances, but that the blame for laxness which brings on trouble is to be found in the home where old-time customs have, been scrapped and the desire for pleasure has supplanted the rule of duty. Wo appreciate Mr. Garrick's interest in the subject, but ho is entirely wrong in his conclusions. When Confidence Is Shak en Giovm Clovclimd Me Peek, nd tiohist despite that nanfo, is a huyer for Dcnny & Co., fruit; and vofiotal!os, wlio operate over the northwest. Mr. McPeek lives1 in Payette, Idaho, and he was over to I-a Grande yesterday. In speaking of business, he remarked: "When confidence Js shaken' business almost quits." lie then reviewed some conditions lie encountered during thej southern Idaho financial panic which is still quite a good-sized healthy panic Mr. McPeek said the volume of business retail merchants do now is not measured by checks on banks, but by ing due to the fear of hanks. There have been so many bank fail ures that every one is afraid of a bank, lie said for a time things were breaking so fast that it was almost necessary before one wrote a check to call up aad see if the bank would he open that day. "I have had all the knocks a man can get in a financial way," o he remarked. "It got so bad that I wired my wife, who with the S children were in California, asking her how much money she had o left and when she wired back she had $1100 I told her to bury it, o for someone had .pulled a chair out from under me and I was o sitting flat on the flour. Oh, it's no fun to live in a country where j banks are failing, and you people of Kaslern Oregon are so much o better off than you realize that you should consider yourself a o 1000 per cent." ' - - o o i Without confidence banks can't run, business can't proceed, and the wheels of industiy quit. Which reminds us of Major Me- Kinlcy wion he ran for president the first term. His campaign sIoganwus "lestore couluhnee and you will restore prosperity." o How true it "was then and how true it is now. TROUT PROVES TO BE WORTHY STEED Ill TTK, Mont., June 1. To rid- on the back of a trout, perhaps for months, with its front ieg8 so set be tween the gills that all its exertions would not free them, was. the un pleasant experience of a three-year- old bull frog, according to Dr. H. A. j Malllef.t of Hutte who has the freak on exhibition in his offire. The trout and its unwelcome and 1 unwlshlng passenger were captured by l.)r. "Maillet at Ids country home near this city. How the frog ever got Into the predicament Is left to the Imagination, but the two are stilly alive. Htill attached and swimming about a tank of running water Ic the doctor's office. Dr. Maillet declared that appar ently the trout understands the wills and ways of a bull frog enough to come, to the surface occasionally ' to let his passenger breathe.
