Some of the moneyed people who are so short sighted they
think things can go on forever as they are now going have hired
a publicity man, have secured a sufficient amount of signatures
fur the referendum and will proceed lo revoke the legislature's ef
fort to give' the people an absolutely fair and impartial law which
will spread the burden of taxation so that farmers and home own
ers will not be paying an unjust portion.
We wonder how long these city dwellers imagine that the inco.mf C'KACKS

They may defeat the income tax law by misrepresentation ;
they may defeat it by making the telephone girl, the clerical ele
ment and the wage earner believe that the law will affect them,
but just as sure as they do they are breeding that trouble which
later will haunt them and bring on a condition far more tense
and severe than these city dwellers ever imagine could happen.
And then we will hear these same self-satisfied, self-cenlered
ones calling upon the "bone and brawn" of Oregon to save them.
May heaven have pity on their poor souls. Can't they see the
Tinbalanced condition of today; can't they see that their petly pro
fessions, their little city shops, their1 alleged fickle incomes will
' perish as the dew before the morning sun unless there is a general
readjustment of affairs, including taxation?
' Go on, you who are ladeued with self-conceit, you who are drunk
with' your own temporary success, you who are lolling in the lap
of present-day luxury; go on, defeat the law, if you can, but when
once defeated and the crisis conies do not call upon the men on
the farms and the rural sections to save you from your own :
depravity. , I
Thus far the argument against the income tax law is that it will :t
drive industry from the state. No industry of consequence will
leave Oregon because it makes money and thrives and pays a small j
part ffi' its income for stale purposes. No individual will shift his
property lo another state because he is asked to contribute his
sha:e of public expense if he is a good citizen. API such argument
is the purest kind of propaganda and is without foundation.
' Learned lawyers of Portland have been declaring the law un
constitutional because an "i" was not dotted or a "t" crossed, but
we have a supreme court that is pretty well equipped to pass on
the law when it is necessary and the learned attorneys up to date
have found nothing but the possible twisting of a word upon which
to base their argument.
Income tax is on the horizon of every state. It will come just
us the iisualian ballot came, 'just as the direct primary came,
just as woman suffrage came. If the present law should suffer a
referendum defeat, still we say, the income tax is coining.
