The Indian- population of the United States is estimated by the
Interior Department to number about 350,000. Notwithstanding
that there has befcn an impression that the race was rapidly declin
ing:, it is now believed that the numbers are not greatly under what
they were when Columbus made his voyage of discovery. While
the tribes were spread from ocean to ocean, in no place was there
dense population and vast stretches of country were without in
habitants or were preserved as hunting grounds.
. Early explorers record traveling lonjf distances without seeing
signs of human beings. From this it is believed that earlier esti
mates were greatly exaggerated rtnd at the peak the numbers did
not exceed half a million. In inter-tribal wars and conflicts with
the whites they may have been decimated below present figures,
but, since many of them are living in a civilized state now, the
numbers should increase. Some tribes, through the discovery -of
oil on their lands, have incomes which put them in the plutocrat
class. '
! Owing to the fact that the British settlers in the United States
were averse to intermaniage with Indians, there is a higher per
centage of pure bbod among American Indians than elsewhere on
this continent. The French and Spanish intermarried with Indians

There is something inspiring about achievement. When oik

tic homes, a tremendous fabric of commerce and industry, he is
incited to go back and try to do something along the line of attain

Fortune does not come by luck. Success comes from playing
the recognized game of business, taking advantage of economic
law, giving the people some better service than they had before.
The pages of any Well circulated magazine, or newspaper will
give the ambitious man hints about the way of business. In the
magazines ho will see the notices of products that have been boom
ed by advertising, lie will note many articles that became a house
hold word through the power of publicity. A few years ago th?
producers of these articles may have been obscure men. Hut they
had faith to go ahead and promote their products through pub
licity, and a great harvest has resulted.
So it is in the use of publicity in the newspaper field. All big
successes in retail trade have been produced by advertising. A
number of years ago in many cases these firm were unknown 01
non-existent, or only starting in a small way.
Their owners wore students of human nature. They knew that
if a concern kept its name and its business before the eyes of the
people, if it constantly told about the things it was sellingit would
uroiise public interest and get more than its share of trade. When
people get that idea and advertise intelligently and give good stuff,
success is sure lo come as anything can be in this world of change.
