Gov. Walter M. Pierce proclaimed
today a holiday and Mayor George L
Baker decreed a half-holiday in Port
land. The school board voted to
close the schools this afternoon and
business houses generally agreed to
cast dull care to the discard and to
join in the turnout.
For several weeks committees' have
booh at work arranging for the oc
casion. Many communities through
out the state obtained blocks of
seats and arranged to send delega
tions. Only the weatherman remained to
be propitiated to make the occasion
a greater success than last year
when thousands were turned away
and every available bit of seating and
standing room at the grounds were
occupied" .
