That Celebration on the Hill
Men like L. C. Scharff, of the American National bank of Pen
dleton, see the importance of the completion of the Old Oregon
Trail and stress its great service to the country sufficiently to de
vote some time toward arranging a celebration in the mountains
between La Grande and Pendleton when" the time comes to 'say to
the world "the ttlue Mountains are now permanently open for
automobile traffic."
" Mr. Scharff headed a delegation from Pendleton a ew days
ago that visited this city and also visited Not Lake, Union and
JJaker to get interest started and arrangements made for the cele
bration. '

; . The merit of the institution known as tho Country Club is of
equal importance to its beauty, and that is legend throughout the
I northwest. : ;
" l"A first step in giving Union county's population a place for
I'urnl enjoyment has been made. Tho ground work of tho picture
is done and from now on it is a case of meeting nature half wiy to
.beautify it. Large sums in the future are not essential, but con
stancy is the main thing. Do a little each year and gradually it
will be found that the Country Club will be keeping pace with
La Grande's growth.
It is a mistaken idea Hint the Country Club is, in a strict sense,
a club. It is not. Probably it could bettor be described as a com
munity enterprise, buildcd to serve tho community. The more
people who form tho habit of visiting it, the more friends it will
have and the easier the task will bo to maintain it. .
This happens to be a year when all public and semi-public enter
prises are suffering for lack of support. Not only is this true in
La Grande, but it is true in all the western cities. It is hoped suf
ficient interest is felt in this beautiful place to insure its financial
support, and we believe there is.
La Grande can boast of the Country Club, not ns an extraordin
arily fancy improvement, but as a playground for the people, a
place where social events join hands with natures own picnic
grounds. -il

This year the Union Stock show pulls a douhlo-heanVr. The
Horse und Cattle Kaisers' association of Oregon meets that same
week in Union and we all know how successful the meetings of this
