La Grande Always Right
Questions iiiuy arise and different angles may Ciid.se the people
of La Grande to differ occasionally, but on a general mailer, La
Grande is always right and can be depended upon to do the right
thing for all concerned.
i The large crowd at the city park yesterday, the closing of all
business in the city yesterday afternoon and the program which
was carried out to dedicate Victory Way all go to show this state
went is one of fact and not merely a bowjuet offered by this news
paper to La Grande's citizen-ship.
Carrying out the pronounced spirit of patriotism wliich Union
county displayed in war times when every loan drive, every Red
Cross drive and every war activity went with a vim, putting this
county in the foreground of all northwest communities, the event
of yesterday proved that with the years that have elapsed patriot
ism has not become dormant, civic spirit is not slumbering and
the community as an entirety is ready at any moment to respond
to the cull of slate or nation.
It was a question wlien the boys came home to determine what
kind of a memorial should be erected in their honor. This questioi.
was before every community in the United States as well as Union
county. Monuments of granite, memorial halls, memorial high
ways and many other features were ii) the list selected by differ
ent localities.
But it was left to La Grande to choose what seems to us to be
the one permanent and lasting memorial a memorial which will
grow with time and become more beautiful, a memorial which will
benefit this and future generations the Victory Way. Norway
Maples have been planted on either side of the highway from the
heart of La Grande to the city park.
That the idea should have emanated from the ladies Neighbor
hood Club of the city is all the more proper. It happened that Mrs.
J. D. Slater, iit a regular meeting of the club three years ago, of
fered tlie suggestion which grew with the ladies, finally blossom
ing into the reality of yesterday.
Now that the trees are planted, and properly planted, let us all
begin to teach in every La Grande home and in the schools the
sacredness of those trees. They are not mere trees they represent
even more than nature in all her beauty and grandeur can give
to them, for they represent the American blood spilled in three
wars that the Hag may wave and peace and happiness reign in thi:s
nation. Every child and eveiy adult in La Grande and Union
county should, and we believe will, exercise a personal administra
tive quality over Victory Way, seeing that no tree is injured, that
they are properly care for and that the lessons of good citizenship
which the trees symbolize shall be impressed on every new arrival
in the city.
