The resignation of u $5,000 a year oflicial at Washington to ac cept a position paying: $100,000 is made the text fur numerous discussions of the poor way in which the government rewards its servants. No commentator goes to the length of advocating com petition by the government with private enterprise in the matter of salaries for uod men, but it is urged that oflicial compensation ought to be several times as large as it is, and the remark is re peated that "the country cannot get the light sort of men for oflice until it pays them more nearly what they are worth." If it wore true that the. government could not get men for the salaries it pays, then radical improvement in compensation al! along the line would be imperative. Hut it is not true. In Presi- dent Harding's cabinet is one of the foremost financiers of the country. To pay him, "what he is worth," what would have to bo the size of his salary? A little thought will show that it would be impossible even approximately to compensate him for his ser vices.
