tried criminal indictments grow
ing out of the Ilerrin riots were
nolle prossed today following the
acquittal by the jury last night
of six' defendants charged with
murder. That was the second
acquittal in the Herrin trials and
thp officials are unwilling to pro
ceed with further trials.

will be furnished by a high class
orchestra and several features will all

will plant the trees along the Vic
tory 'Way Tuesday.
The dance has the enforcement of

Mayor Merton Kiddle Is
sues Edict for All Citizens
to Beautify Community.
Island City is to undergo the
greatest spring clean-up of its his
tory, according to advices received
this smorning direct from Mayor Kid
dle's office. The mayor has issued
n mandate for all property owners
to clean up their premises during
the week of April ltith to 21st. and
the streets and alleys as well, so
that the suhurban section will keep
in harmonious accord with the spring
time appearance of nature which is
ever marked and beautiful in the
Island City zone.
ThB city commission of La Grande
has again taken up the repair of the
streets leading to the state pavement
of the Island road and it is believed
this time there will be some prema
nent and. satisfactory work done to
' overcome a piece of road that has
been the subject of bitter criticism
for the past two years.

thief of police Thomas Cox, and
Lawrence Pedigo, were convicted
today of conspiracy to sell and
protect lawless privileges. They
were sentenced to the peniten
tiary for intermediate terms. Cox
was also fined $2,000.

tions were Riven by the federal farm
loan board. Friday night that an in
terest rate of 5c per cent would be
charged on loans maJe by th new
intermediate credit bauks. At the
same time announcement was made
by the board of the official rules
and regulations governing loans un
der the agricultural credits act.
While the interest rate to be
charged will be fixed by the credit
banks, subject to approval of the
farm loan board, fanners will be
able, if the indicated interest rate
is accepted, to borrow money at 7
per cent or less. The law specifies
that the frediscounfcing agency shall
not charge in excess of 1 per cent
for handling the obligations.
Money Available Soon.
Commissioner Lobdell said he ex
pected some of the banks would be
ready to ma lie actual loans by Ap
ril 20th.
Although it is not necessary that
the rates of the 12 'banks he uni
form, board members believed they
likely would be. Mention was made
of the possibility that some redis
counting corporations, such as the co
operatives and other associations
made up strictly of producers may
not take the full fee allowed them
by law, and it was pointed out that
any such action would make for
cheaper interest charges to the farm-
ers or livestock growers.
The opinion was general that a
rate of 5i per cent, with the redis
count charge added, would mean a
material reduction to the averags
farmer in interest.
