The circumstances which led to the issue of the first formal statement made by the present postmaster general since his as sumption of ollice were regrettable in themselves and in some as pects even tragic, but they contain a highly salutary lesson, which Mr. New drives emphatically home, and which it is to be hoped will sink deeply into the minds of the people all over the country, and especially into the minds of the poorer classes. The closing of a private bank in New York and the absconding of its owners brought ruin and misery to hundreds, perhaps thous ands, of forlorn men and women, principally Italians, who had in trusted to the concern all the savings of a lifetime. No one could contemplate without pity the spectacle of a poor old woman who by work in laundries and the practice of the strictest economy, had managed to save $5,000 as a stay and support for her declining years and found it all gone in one fell swoop in the wreck of the de funct depository. And her case was typical of scores of others. Spurred to action by so heartrending a catastrophe, the post master general has directed that $25,000 circulars in Italian, giving particulars of the postal savings system, be distributed on the East Side of New Yolk. He points out that for those who do not desire to maintain acve banking accounts the government affords, through the postollice departments system of savings, an ideal plan for the gradual accumulation of small sums, which earn a fair rate of interest and are returnable at any moment on demand. Moneys so deposited can never be lost, for the security Iwhind them is co-extensive with the entire credit of the United States. Stri.nge to say, postal savings deposits steadily declined each month since January. 1921, but tfiey touk an upward turn in I'el ruary, 1923. ' . ... : ' Spoiled in the Making , An interesting story comes from Mexico City to the effect that Thomas Alva Edison, the world's greatest inventor, is a descendant of the Aztec kings. Senora De Alva of Mexico City claims to be a second cousin of the inventor. - According to the researches of Senor De Alva, the Edison fam ily name before the Aztecs were conquered was'Ixtlixochitl, and j Thomas, the founder of the family, was baptized by he Duke of ! AJva after th eeomiucst. It appears that the third son of Tliimias Do Alva married an English woman named Edison. ; 2 Pictures of Thomas Alva Edison and Senor De Alva, printed in Mexico City newspapers are said to have caused considerable com- ment as to their resemblance. Persons who profess to be judges ; of physiognomy say the general likeness of the two men is such ! as to credit the belief that they are relatives. I Guadalupe De Alva, who lives near Mexico City at the age of I seventy-five years, is ri ported as saying that she often heard her J father speak of his nephew who lived in the United States and who was an inventor. She added that in HUG a number of Americans; visited her home in search of information respecting the connec- tion of Edison and De Alva families. j 1 :. This is a rather interesing story in relation to a well-known American. The only defect it appears to have is that it is not true, j William II.
