PAGE THREE TIMBER MARKET STILL ACTIVE Burn Home of Ireland's President jr The lumber . market retains its great activity despite the cold wave which lately has swept much .of the country and has slowed down out door work anil retail trade, says the American Lumberman, Chicago. A full resumption, if not expansion of these activities, is looked for as soon as weather conditions permit. Buy ing therefore holds up strongly and inquiries are numerous. Orders for all softwoods, and also shipments, remain greatly in excess of produc tion. This means that the lumber shortage is increasing. Many mills are withdrawing fiom the market, being oversold as far ahead as they care to be. The mills subscribing to the Southern Pine Association, for example, on January 2(1, had orders on hand for 3,39j,l 1(J feet per mill, equal to more than six weeks' pro-, duction at the current rate. Cargo business continues to hold the attention of the west Coast mills. The California market is un precedently active and is paying un usual prices. Lumber offered the Atlantic seaboard is therefore be coming strictly limited in quantity and .nat available for the middle west is confined almost entirely to transit cars sent out by wholesalers who purchased ahead several weeks ago. These transits aie proving a boon to the trade in that section, and are being lapidly Picked up. ury nortnern pine and hemlocK is very scarce and in big demand. Western pines in shop and. lower grades are practically unobtainable in any quantity, and uppers are in none too good supply. Redwood and cypress have eager markets, ami are scarce and strong. North -Carolina pine mills are forced constantly to turn down oiders at attractive prices on account of their Over-booked con dition. The sol'twood'niaikot, in a "word, is strong, throughout, , and prices continue to: tend upward. This is especially true of common build ing items, such art' dimension und boards. Upper guides generally are unchanged, in southern pine and Douglas fir Perhaps largely due to temporary comparative dullness of the car material trade. General in dustrial consumption is voluminous and expanding, and factory items on the whole aru scarce, with an ad vancing tendency. The httrdwood trade is featured, as for some- time, by if very strong I demand. Automobile manufacturers are still heavily on the market with a wide range of rccnirements. Fur niture interests are .increasing their takings, and flooring and interior trim makers tremnin important con sumers. Box and crating plants are keeping low grades moving freely. These and miscellaneous consumers, including exporters, competing among themselves for the dwindling dry stocks, are creating a steadily advancing market. 'William H.
