ARRIVES IN SPOKANE

fred Johnson, who has been cne of
the leading jockeys on eastern and
southern race tracks for several
years, has arrived in Spokane after
what he regards as a strenuous but
his most successful season, and will
spend the remainder of the winter at
his home here.
Johnson achieved national fame
when he piloted Morvich to victory
in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill
Downs, near Louisville. Ky., . last
May, and won the $50,000 Purse for
the turf classic. His final triumph
of the season was whm he won
both divisions of the Pinilico Futur
ity at Baltimore, Md., November 4,
and carried away the $80,000 purse
offered for the event.
Johnson won more than 20 stakes
during six months of racing last
vear for. a total of $290,000. This
is said to bo more than double, the
winnings of any other jockey on
American tracks last year. John
son is only 22 years old. He races
under contract to Willis Sharpe Kil
mer of New York, receiving $100 a
month and 10 percent of his win
nings.. His percentage for last year
is ijstimated at between $20,000 and
S:i0.000.
Ihe little jockey plans on spend
ing the next month on the family
farm near here and in hiking over
the surrounding country to keep
himself in shape nnd to rest his
nerves. He expects to lenve here
sometime in February for Hot
Springs, Ark., ifor a month of train
ing to reduce to his racing weight
of 112 pounds.
Hist first race of the. 1023 season
will orobablv be about the middle
of April, when the season opens in I
Maryland. Ho is looking forward to,
this year's Kentucky. Derby, which
will be run about May 15, for Sally's
Alley, considered the best of the Kil-
