American Influende in Europe.
"You have very great influence in Europe," Clemen
ceau tells Americans, "You don't know your enormous
Kiwer over there, the enormous power that you have up
on European minds. If you knew it, you would exert
more of it in the right direction and would help Europe
and help yourselves at the same time."
When this country began definitely to withdraw from
participation in foreign affairs it did so because of a pre
valent feeling that foreign intercourse was perilous, that
Europe was too strong for us, and America venturing
back into the Old War after long isolation was but a lamb
for fleecing or slaughter.
Latterly so many foreign statesmen, financiers and
captains of industry have been talking to us in the same
vein as Clenienceau that Americans are inclined t obelieve
that America, after all, is not a lamb but an eagle.
There seems to be a good deal of sincerity in Europe V.
present pleas for help. And it isn't evident that Europe
wants nothing but money or credit. Europe seems to
want, more than anything else, a strong voice at her coun
cil table delivering judgments that the disputants would
respect because of their disinterestedness.
f America really has so much powr as Clenienceau
represents, and if this power, once put forth, would suffice
to smooth out Europe's troubles without fighting, certain
ly it would be a blessed thing to exert the power. Also, as
Clenienceau intimates, it might be a profitable thing. Hut
Americans seem to need a little more persuasion.
Portland is doing fine with her community chest this
year. La Grande must follow suit before long, for it is
the only way to handle public charity. This city handles
it through the lied Cross, which is but another name for
comunity chest. So get ready for a reasonable donation
to the cause of charity in a short time. "
