But It Is Not Done
Pendleton held a big meeting a few days ago for the
purpose of starting a movement to develop the Columbia
river. As usual J. N. Teal, recognized as an export on
navigation and transportation rates, was present and
told what might lie done.
But there have been such meetings occasionally for
the last quarter century. The government has expended
fortunes in making the Columbia suited to river traffic,
yet there is no traffic.
Only a few years back a big celebration was held
when the locks were completed and it was heralded far
and wide that now Eastern Oregon and Eastern Washing
ton had river transportation and a lesser freight rate
would follow. "
How many ships work up and down the Columbia l iv
er today? None! Just why we do not know. Put for
some reason all the money spent on the river has brought
no transportation.
It is like a lot of things looks fine on paper but when
put to practical use it has its shortcomings and heavy
expenses.

Justice Thomas MclBride had a birthday party a few
nights ago. Nothing especially remarkable about a birth
day for a lot of people, but when you contemplate the fact
that Justice McBride has been on earth seventy-five year
this birthday is somewhat remarkable. And still'more
remarkable and refreshing it is to know that the Justice is
in good health and works every day on the supreme bench
of Oregon with remarkable vigor, exceptional ability and
with an idea of justice that has no parallel in the west.
That lie is Oregon's grand old man is positive; that
he is one of the pillars upon which justice west of the
Pocky Mountains lias been erected is a matter of history;
that he is a real man among men is known to those who
know him best.. - ,,

one hundred mark and retain his exceptional intellect, his
