The Twisted Portland Press I According to space writers on the Portland dailies political jolts are being wrapped up in bundles for tlie Pierce administration. However, as fast as a, reporter springs a "sensational" appointment the appointee ad dresses the chair and informs the public that no such a thing exists. For instance, the Portland press had Ed. Aldrich appointed as Pierce's private secretary until the Pendleton East Oregonian could rush an edition on the street and its editor, Air. Aldrich, in a signed article, de nied the rumor. Then William Pullman of Iiaker was to lie highway commission, according to Portland reporters. But Air. Pullman comes out squarely and says, "no polit ical appointments for him." It would seem the Portland jiews reporters are either hard pressed for "stories" or else they see fit to disregard the facts. This was made very plain in the running stories following the election in which the Portland Journal credited the defat of a Union county legislative candidate to enemies at home. At that din ner there will be felicitation for his success in' the gover nor's chair. And it will be unanimous for La (iraude is deeply appreciative of having the honor of a governor resident. The political features which lead up to .Mr. Pierce election need not be discussed because people are united now on the fact that he will make. a good governor; tjiat he will be a governor of the people a man w ho will t(0 his very best to reduce the state expense. Senator Kberhard will preside at the dinner and Judge Crawford, who managed the Pierce campaign, will be one of the speakers. H will be a sort of love feast, where good fellowship reigns and.
