Just now when there is talk of wage reduction and' commodity reduction all over the country, it is of especial j interest. to turn back history's pages in order to learn from the past what has happened relative to labor antf re-, duced wages. According to the bureau of labor statistics' at Washington, for seven centuries the wages paid to lihor have nol receded but advanced steadily. Whenever, any condition arose that sent wages temporarily very high, a reaction came, but when the final adjustment to normal conditions arrived, it was found that labor had held most of the advancement that had been gained in' ab normal times. Should this condition still prevail, and it seems to be doing that very thing, we need not look during the next decade for much lower wages, and in turn with-' out lower wages, ,the price of commodities will remain; high. Products from the soil are the only filing's that stay down at the present time and were they priced in har mony with other things, this country could very well s(ate that it .is on a high plane to stay for some time, t'nless products of the soil do advance, there will be a serious : hitch in the general machinery of business and probably! a few cogs will fly out of the main drive wheel.
