country have an enormous supply of
coat on hand. The Ford Motor com
pany could obtain enough coal to cov
er a tract of 10 acres square if it
would submit- to being victimized by
profiteers, it was declared.
-for several weeks, it was asserted,
the Ford offices at Dearborn have
been flooded with offers of coal with
delivery guaranteed. It was declared
that the prices asked ranged from 100
to $00 per cent above the norma! cost.
,The Detroit manufacturer believes
that if he yields to what he terms
"the holdup" of the con! brokers, every
other manufacturer will have to fol
io suit and that coal prices will
reach an unprecedented figure. One

The Ford company has recently re
ceived a large number of offers on
the ;part of coal operators to sell
mines. None of these otiers nave
bipen seriously considered, however,;
because of the present transportation
conditions. It was explained by per
sons close to Mr. Ford today that
the offering of mines meant but littl?.
"as they can be purchased now for
almost nothimr because of the large
stocks of coal held by brokers."

The state superintendent's office has
issued two new manuals, one a teach
ers' manual covering the study of Ore
gon history in the eighth grade and
one dealing with agriculture for us;
in the elementary and high schools of
Oregon.

'A slight accident o-curred this
morning about eight o'clock at the
interaction of Ilepot nod Jefferson
when Ray Brown, driving truck for
the Orandc Ronde Lumber company,
ran into a Japanese bov about eleven
years of age, named Jhzosh. knock
ing htm down but not injuring him ex
cept for a few bruises.
The boy was attempting to cross in
front- of the truck and apparently de

contest- promises to be tense with
competition for the next week.
Moats fifing Prepare!,
The Labor Council heartily Invites
the citizens of La Grande and the
Ad club to he with them at Pendle
ton en masse, and are preparing for
a strong La Grande representation.
As in past years, the nig parade wiil
find many La Grande floats in the
line. The machinists are preparing
a double float, the htbor council
will prepare one and practically all
of the organizations will fail in
iiae within the next few days,
frizes on Wspfay.
The three prizes -.to be presented
to the Goddess of Labor and her
two maids are now on display. The
Santour watch, valued at $75, is
shown in Birnies,' the Good Luck
Bracelet, worth $35, is on display
at 'Siegrlst's and the Silver Chate
laine bag, valued nt $25, It shown
at Peares. And to all contestants
who bring In more than $50, a
reward will be presented.
The Labor Council announces
that the arrayal for the Goddess of
Labor will be provided by them but
that the maids will have to furnish
their own , equipment. All three
will receive the trip to i'eiuHclou
with all expenses furnished.
