In u very lengthy statement (lovcrnor Olcott has issu ed u iti.1v to Charles Hall relative to the recount which Hull lias demanded. Jt is rat her d ilTicult to el the swin it Olcott s replv. hut; when analyzed' id seems to he an ai iienl to the entirj electorate of the, Keimhlican party to see that faif play is given and if a portion of the votes are re counted, as Mr. J fall has demanded, that the entire Re- 1 1 , K 1 i r i : 1 1 1 vote in the state he'recountei The expense of such an undertaking is estimated at $50,000, and then if either partly is dissatisfied with the result it is prohahle that further li'K'al procedure can he started and the. same, tiling tfone overaaiu provided there is sufficient money raised 'to defray the expense. It is apparently starting something tliat ha.s no end. .If the reply was intended for a campaign document the governor had it very adroitly worded for he attacks the volunteer donations made to Hall from supporters in Oregon and from sympathizers in other stales. The governor mentions the .'fact that he is unalile financially toeonilmt such a fund, which by inference would lead the reader to believe a free-will offering niijiht be in order to assist in the recount. This isa badstate of affairs. If we were to drift fur ther iiito.resUessness and discontent by not aeeeptiuy; the results of a primary election, whatever 11 icy may he, un less ifraud can be determined, then we are at once discredi ting our form of government, a nd saying to the world lliat we have a system which we will accept when it pleases us and we will reject it and demand a new deal if it displeases Ilk ' f O . . DON'T KNOW PUBLIC SENTIMENT. with ulilic iclief that lh ure striking a sent i -y can iainst Railroad officials are unfaniilia incut if t,hey continue to. rest in the make the people believe the shopmen then- government. i ? - , , More, men joined the strikers yesterday and it is plain to those who try and keep anything like abreast of public sentiment that the strike has just fairly started. It is a most regrettable thing that it cannot be set tled, but. it is doubtful if it ever will be settled along the lines now laid out. With a Labor Hoard apparently act ing as attorney for the railroad companies with every aci neeiningly directed at, destroying the railroad workers' organizations, with the taking of rights and principle which labor has st rived for thirty years to gain, the Even ing Observer sees little hope of a settlement along these lines. Not a man working for the railroads, even though how unaffected by present rulings; can feel safe for the future. I'Yir this, reason the striking shopmen it 1 only have the sympathy iff all railroad' workers, they not onl have the financial assistance of men in railroad work, bin sooner or lateral! rail organizations will come to the under standing that if the shopmen lose this st rikc and organied labor is beaten, other men in other d'epartnienis w ill soon feci the knife, and this nation w ill be back to the nld. day wheil labor had no standing and Ihe wealth of the coim try dealt with it as it saw fit. Public sentiment is wjth the railroad shopmen, and nil the claims to the contrary from the White House down to the smallest official of the railroad operating forces, will not change it.
