In one of the closes and most in teresting meets Kastern Oregon ever witnessed l"nr.dlcton high school nosed out La Grande Saturday after noon by winning the relay, making the final acinic Oii to 57 in favor of the visiting toun. Hy winning second place in the javelin I.a C!ram!o had a chance to win but fell down in the relay. At on time during tho meet l.a Grande led 4(1 to 2(1. Pendleton made a clean Bween of tho high jump and the BSD-yard run, giving them 18 points at a critical time. Tho work of the La Grande sprinters, Sandbcrc and lleughnn, was the featuro of the meet. Despite an injured foot Sandlerg gamely en tered and won 13 points for the local "(TK'i'egation. Snndbcrjr was high point man with 1:1, 1. arson second with 12 and Heughnn cumc thirj with 11. AM three- are members of the blue and white team. Winner of Pendleton crossed the tape first in the high hurdles but waa disqualified on account of knocking down too many hurdles. McGe, of Pendleton, would have placed third in tho low hurdles, but fell, losing to 1-arson, of La Grande. No records wuio broken although good time was made in the 100 and 220 yard dashes. jani'!4ierg placed first with 10 3-5 and 24 1-6 respec tively. Larson won the high hurdles in the fast time of 18 1-5 and Warner made tho low hurdles in 27 flat One of the surprises of the meet was Heughnn winning first in the broad jump over Sandberg. Truly he was the da;ik horse of the meet. Iji Giande excelled in the sprint, broad jump, shot put and showed up well in the 440 and low and high hur dles, Pendleton was especially strong in the middle distances and the jav elin, discus, high -jump and pole vault. The meet was run off in three hiurs, about twenty minutes slower than would have been tho ense but for a drizzling showur that halted the discus and javelin events, Hoth schools had a number of rootcin on hand nnd in addition to their backers, Pendleton brought along a goat as a mascot. They still have it. 1a G'-nando was handicapped by the iajurics to Sandberg and the fact that Gene Taylor was in the hospital. Tay lor would' have placed in the pole vault and high jump nnd possibly have made the meet closer.
