consisting of steel and wooden frames
for handling the belt and bucket sys

alongside has been torn down for
firewood. The Peresk warehouses
must be restored.
Coming into the city, along the
railway line from Kiev the train runs
for half a mile, along the gaunt walls
of big buildings the roofs and' upper
stones of which are gone.
For all this the city maintains it
self solidly. "ihe sewage, water
works and electric light systems func
tion. Theie is no doubt that Odessa can
and will come back quickly.
The saddest feature ot Odessa's life
has to do with the immediate present. '
Coming in on the train there was a
whole car full of ilead people, frozen
during long weeks of travel or dead
from hunger or from typhus.
On the very streets of once Proud
nnd prosperous Odessa where bread
could he had by the basketful there
are daily dropping dozens of people,
ill nnd dying from hunger and typhus.
In the only large restaurant in the
city famishing people beg the privi
lege of sweeping the scraps from the
table anil these scraps they eat. These
hungry pel sons were once well-to-do
people, now thinned down to the skin
and bone. The thinness of the peo
ple and the beauty of the city are
the two first impressions of the stran-
ger.
