C. Sirs. J. W. I.elghlon and daughter, 'Miss Kloino, returiipd Saturday morning from a visit of several weeks at Willam ette valley points. Tlio Elgin iFarm Bureau meeting was held last Saturday afternoon. Tlij especial business was to meet with the orgaailzer, Mr. Barnes; who camo here In the interest of gain ing new members to the local branch. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Howard and twb small sons of Wyoming, came In this -week for an indefinite visit here". Mrs. Howard is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Hug and is well known in this community. Mr. Howard has bee,a employed in the coal mines there. The revival services conducted by Theo. H. Oshorn have been receiving a great deal of attention in Elgin for the past ten days. The meetings were held In the Methodist church, but the crowds were so large that they were unable to find seating room In the church and the city hall was obtained. Mr. Osborn has had capacity houses there for the services held there. Mr. Osborn's daughter, Mrs. Backus, assists by training thd children In their ''Boos ter Choir." Her work with them is wonderful and a large number of children are taking advantage of her training. Mrs. Irn Bradford, who has been at Hot Lake for several weeks, re turned homo Inst week. .Mrs. Luclen Shelton returned from a week's Mslt with Relatives in Baker, , Wednesday. At present she and her young son, Donald, are staying at the John Shelton home. Miss Hazel -Graham returned Sat urday morning from a few days' visit at La Grande. Miss Fay Wlllson was an over night nest Friday (evening with Miss, Valgene- Tuttle of Rlnehart. They both came to Elgin on Satur day's train. Mrs. Mat "VVels was a visitor In La Grande during the past werk. She returned Saturday morning. The American Legion post held Its wrestling and boxing contests Monday night. They hod Invited the members of the Auxiliary and other friends 10 quite a crowd attrtided their entertainment. A business meeting was held afterwards. The post has rented the building until recently used as the restaurant and will organize a club to fnake this recreation hall for the use of mem bers. The Auxiliary will probably ild Its meetingsvln the rooms also. It ill fill a much-needed want of 18" nm",for there are very few ea'a0'0 meeting pises for., small Mr. Blnford, who has been em ployed In the Hilton garage during the past winter, stopped oft at El gin this week. He is on his way to his home on Cabin creek. W. 1'. Trumbull has charge of the station during the absence of Mr. Hazen. The Hazen family has been culled to Baker by the Illness of Mr. Hazon's father. The young children of Mr. and Mrs. Thelbert Choate have been 111 for several days with influenza. County Itoadmaster Blrney came to Elgin Monday On business ipnt ters connected with the road work near here. Dr. E. O. Wlllson has been com missioned a dental lieutenant in the Organized Ileserve division. Dr. Wlllson took 'the examinations at Pendleton a short time ago. J. W. Brown came in Monday morning from Rogerson, Idaho. Mr. Brown has bt'en the proprietor of a general store here for several months but to date Mrs. Brown has been managing It. This Is' Mr- Brown's first visit hero Hinco the store was opened. . James Wlckcns of Cricket Flat was a visitor in I-ai Grnndu over the week-end. He went up to look af ter business mntters. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Barnes and ron. Dale, spent Sunday nt l'almer Junction. They were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Young and the Rob ert Lane family. Irvy Kulin of Summe'rvllle, was in Elgin Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Tuttle of Rlne hart are visiting relatives In Elgin for a few days. They, are at the Lee Tuttle home. A. R. Wakefield of the high school attended the principals' merg ing, held In La Grande last Satur day. The senior class Is practicing steadily on tho iplny they plan to give the last of the month. Principal E. 0. Bailey is having extensive repairs and changes made to Ills residence. Mr. and Mrs. C. 7). Bean have moved into the bungalow formerly occupied by Mr. Jiean'a ,parents. This is a charming home and In a splendid location. ; : i: Elgin is observing Clen-Op and PalntUp week, although the weath er Is not conducive to extensive ac tivities In this direction. The marriage of Miss 'WaundR Ryder and Ernest Graham of this city took place at Enterprise last Friday. The young people have both spent the greater part of their lives In Elgin and their many frletids here wish them much happiness. They will cither make their home here or in Pendleton for the pres ent. William Miller has a crew of nwn al work cutting through the remain ing drifts over the highway to wards Mlnnm. In a few days the way la expected to be open as far as the hard surface extends. Word has been received that work will be begun on hard-surfacing the hill to Mlnnm as soon as the weath er permits. A. R. Wakefield has his agricul ture class but these nlco spring days pruning the trees that home owners have grown on thi'lr grounds. This Is a new departure for the school and townspeople as well and Is a service that Is much appreciated. They also plan to do spraying for local residents. Claude Holbrook left on Wed nesday night's train to spend a Ww days on business at La Grande. The K. of P. lodge has begun a campnlgn for members In this lo cality. This is a state-wide move ment nnd the contract will last un til July. Summerville News Notes Fundamental Difference.
