One member of the commis sion1 was elected because ho said "six cents is too much for a five cent ride;" another member was elected because he had a fine family of children, and he used their pictures on his campaign card. That is the kind of monkey work the direct primary is incubating. Thcro is no regard for efficiency or fitness for office. Take the governor's raco in the Re publican primaries at the present time. Here is another sample of the weak ness of tho cherished and hallowed direct primary. The party Is not run ning any candidate whom it has an nounced. Every one of them is run ning himself. And as wo go along with increas ing public expense largely caused by self -nominated men holding office, arc we going to liko It? Arc we going to still claim there is a divinity nboul a Plan thnt results in the slate get ting the present public service com mission; that brings us a chaotic po litical condition in which religion is injected Into matters of state; thn practically turns the power to vott further tnx on property over to th? voter who carries no property respon sibility; thnt makes a mockery of political franchise by some cnmlidnti adopting a catchy slogan when ability of the candidate for office is nil; that makes the burden of tax mount high for a less efficient government than we had before the days of the dlrco primary.
