M.T5E FTVE. LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER WEDNESDAY, JULY 13, 1S2I TEST MAY BE MADE OF GRAIN STANDARD LI VMATIU.A COIXTV FAILMDKS ANNOUNCE ACTION Millers Adopt Federal Standard, 1 Farmers Claim This Would Mean Loss of Millions GREAT AID TO CITIZENSHIP "PENDLETON, July 12 L'malilla county grain growers are ready to institute a lent suit against the Northwest Millers' association to de termine whether the millers shall ba forced to comply with the Ore gon state grain law which makes the standard bushel 58 pounds, the federal standard which the mlllcrB hare adopted being 60 pounds. The wrath of tho grain growers of the northwest was aroused when the millers' association;, in a recent meeting in Portland, voted to dis regard the slate laws, claiming that they were unconstitutional and in conflict with federal statutes. Grow ers intend to take such action as may. be necessary to determine whether Ihe laws are conslltutional. According to Roy Rltner, presi dent of the Oregon state senate, who heads the Umatilla grain discount committee, tho approximate loss to growers would, in the Inland Um pire, aggregate close to two million dollars, and in Umatilla county alone would amount to nearly a quarter million. ; It was the Intuntion of Ihe mill ers to hold the growers to the fed eral statute passed during tho war which makes 60 pounds of wheat the standard bushel and a discount on the grain below that test." The stale gain discount law makes 58 pounds of wheat the standard with . a discount only below wheat of Unit teal The difference between Ihe two discount laws amounts to great deal -in- hent sold In lurge contracts. Growers figuro'that this difference is going Into the pockets of the exporters and believe that It should Instead be left In the hands of the growers.
