become in fact direct competitors of the railroads whose prop
erty is taxed to build the highways, a .serious question arises
as -to whether commercially operated freight trucks on the
highways should not pay a heavy license. I!ut even then, there
could be no sufficient license charged to .offset the cost and
upkeep of tracks that are furnished the trucks- by state and
nation,
Kuilroad workers will be interested in this phase of. the
mutter, for they realize no transportation company can suc
ceed without business. The effort made during the last session
of the Oregon legislature to tax the passenger buses on high-,
ways was supported by all railroad employees., as was the meas
ure to force automobiles to stop before crossing a railroad track.
