I'EOPI.KS WAKKHOl'SK AT I'ENDJ-KTON HAS INCKKASKI) CAl'ITAI. I LANSING AND WILSON. Former Secretary of StiiU Robert LmiKinff, who wub dis missed from the service by President Wilson, js now writing the story of the pence conference imd the u:gue of nations. While there is little in his articles,, in the Post that most people had not alreudy concluded to be about the facts in the case, there is no question but what the former secretary clinches for once and all the popular American opinion' or the Wilson atti tudo durinir those trying timcR. That the delegation from America to the peace conference was of no avail unless it agreed with the ex-President, was generally believed, and now Mr. Lansing cinches that belief. ' Uut.fct i'B now look with charity on the weakness of Mr. Wilson.. It was a mistake on his part, but Americans are too big to now pick a further quarrel with the man whose physical wreck wis accomplished in a timo when the world creaked on us hingi's. The Lansing story will be all right for historical libraries, but for popular reading it has little place today. " CLARA HAJION AND OKLAHOMA. Some of the newspapers believe that it was a matter of law form to try Clara Hamon or the killing of Jako llamon, Repub lican national committeeman at Ardmore, UKianoma. 11118,-we believe, is the right conclusion. ' Oklahoma guessed the erdict of the jury . from the, very morning the news spread that Clara had shot Jake. The general public cleared Clara at once. Sentiment was that "Jake needed killing and got what was coming to him." But Oklahoma, unlike it was once, now claims that, the law must be satisfied with trials instead of justice being done by lynching or shooting, as .prevailed in the days of "No Mon's Land. So the trial was held, but if we have the right recollec tion of those Oklahomans, the mind of every spectator-was fully made up before any evidence was submitted, and this is largely true of' the jury. And Clara was the heroine. In the minds of Oklahomans she did what was right, and had the jury decided otherwise, we be lieve there would have been a widespread of firearms with pos sibly a few lynchings. Be Reasonable, Prof.! (Dlctotrruphed at Greenwood school.) Prafeaaor. "Johnny, sit down in front!"- Johnny. "I can't!" ' Hope the slccninir Bickness ilni not hit any of thc.six-d'iy bicycle riders at Madison S(;uur Garden, The fact that tho water system of La Grande mur.t be rebuilt and enlarged is l;ut another evidence of the growth of the com munity over a period of fifteen years. There may have been some faulty construction, but it takes a great deal more water to supply the city now than it did then. "When P.ob comes homo" is a favorite expression among, all the boys who want to confer with Senator It. N. Stanfield about themselves or their friends' appointments. Rut the road to Cove is n paramount need, anil don't overlook the fact. Two ladies j;ijy met a boy' one. day, Ills lens were briar scratched. Ilia clothes were blue, but u nut I brown hue. Marked the place whore his pants were mitched. They bubbled with joy at the bluc- eyeo uoy With nls spot of nut brown hue; ' "Why didn't you putch with a color to match," They chuckled, "Whp not in blue?" Come, don't be coy, my blue brown boy, fipeak out," 'unil thoy laughed with Klee: - And he blushed rose-red.' while he hashfully nld: ' ,'That ain't no patch; that's me!" , Kenneth McCormick says that the auccessful politician is the one who knows Just how much the "di ple" will stand for. PENDLETON, Mar. 21'. Announ cement has been made of the increase in capitalization of the Peoples' Ware house from S',0,000 10 150,u00.
