ii Baker county when about fifty
nlhusiasiic butilers and fishermen
gathered nt the club rooms of the
.:haiiiber of Commerce and formed
he Baker Comity Rod and Gun
Club. Tho purpose of the club is to
organize sportsmen throughout the
county Into an enthusiastic body,
and through concerted action at
tempt to get a better share of. the
fish fry and g:i(ne. that is distributed
by the slate. ' '
When under way the club activi
ties will not be confined to bunting
and fishing. There will also be trap
and rifle shooting, and casting tour
naments. A rifle . raniie' is already
under consideration.

This plan has been in operation at
Rujada, in the Umpqua national for
est, fsr a number of 'years, the itov-
ernment having established the ex
periment there as one of the first of
its kind in the country. The plan has
been found io successful that prac
tically all ot the timber in the north
west is to be marketed in this man
ner. It insures continuous and per-:
manent operation of the mills in each
locality and provides airainst a com
plete exhaustion of the timber of tiie
country. j
When a section is cut 'off the slash
ings aie burned within u year after
being cut. It has been the practice
to leave a few large seed trees stand
ing, but experiment has shown that
this is not necessary, as there are suf
ficient seeds in the. ground to insure
a new growth.
