the war began, resigned his position of

BUCHAREST, Oct. 2. (By Mail.).
The famous salt baths of Salsburg,
where tho millionaires of Austria,
Hungary and the Balkan states used
to jspend their summers, are now cur
ing rheumatic Rumania soldiers.
Stripped of all their luxurious fur
nishings during the war, the Salsburg
baths have just been refitted with the
aid of the American Red Cross for use
as a military hospital for chronic rheu
matism resulting from trench warfare.
Five hundred soldiers are already
there, recovering from rheumatism anil
similar diseases contracted while un
dergoing the hardships of war.
In times of peace, thousands of
tourists visited Salsburg, high up in
the Transylvanian Alps, southwest o
Kronstadt. Many came for the daz
zling social life. With is magnificient
hotels and gay casino, it was per
haps the chief show place of eastern
Europe. When the Germans pushed
the Rumanians out of this district
early in the war, General Maekenser
and his staff took possession of the
town and staged luxurious revelry
there. When the Germans left they
looted the place, stripped the hotel!
of tapestries, furniture and brass fit
tings. Even the equipment for thr
medicinal baths whs wrecked.

louis fur market this winter, accord

winter the skins brought about $47
