Johnson arrived here to day from San Francisco to make his first speeches in the northwest against acceptance of the proposed league of nations covenant in ita present form. The Bars lg en the Ed Halley place, about three miles northeast of Is land City. Auout 4 o'clock the house hold were aroused by the crackling ot the lire, and upon looking out ot the window saw the burn in a blaze. They rushed out but upon opening the doors were mot with a sheet ot fire and could not reach the three horses which were In the barn, two ot them valuable work horses aud the other a favorite saddle horse. Neighbors came as soon as they saw the large blaze, ana it was through the etforta of many of the nearby farmers that the cow barn, which la immediately behind the main barn, was saved. This also ital full of hay. Mr. Halley was not at home at the time, as he is in Idaho taking care of affairs on his other furni at. Buhl, Idaho. Hay is a large product on the Idaho ranch, so Mrs. Halley long distanced him this morning so that he would not sell the hay from bis Idaho ranch, before the loss in hay here could be replaced. At tho time ot the fire, the barn was full ot alfalut hay, and also contained a thousand dollars worth of oats, besldos the harness and the throe valuable horses. Mr. Halley carried $1,000 insurance on the barn, but this will not near cover the loss. The Insurance, man was called out to make an investigation after the fire, and he was of tho opinion that tho fire was caiiBed by spontaneous combustion, as alafalfu hay often does this. SERVICES HELD FOR COOK I1ARY Tho funeral services of Vernon Cook, little three months old Bon of Mr and Mrs. C. W. Cook of Connor dale, were held this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Bohnenkamp chapel. Interment was In tho Cath olic cemetery. Mr. Cook la an cm loyee of tho O. W. L1KELLEY OFT L. R. Kelly, who has been very ill with typhoid, died early this morning Mr. Kelly came to La Grande a little over a year ago, in September. For ti time he was associated with the Gallo way Rccs company, where he was cm ployed as a mechanic. Later he start ed out for himself with the bicycle shop, which was formerly owned bj George Ruby. The funeral will be held from the J. C. Henry undertaking parlors Thurs day at 2 o'clock. The Masons, a which Mr. Kelly was a member, wil' have charge of the ceremony. At tho regular monthly meeting of tho La Grande Post of tho Amer ican Legion, pfuns were laid for a smoker and genornl get-to-gethor which will be hold In the near fu ture. The work of the Legion has boon subdivided and assigned to commit tees so that Its functions may pro ceed in an orderly efficient manner. Already tho Legion has Btarted to work and promises to ba ono of the big factors In the community. The membership roll now numbers over 125 names and more aro being add ed from time to time. The growth of the La Grando Post has been steady and although only organized a short fimo before the state convention held In Portland some fow days ago, the membership here at that tlino wus sufficient to entitle this post to two dologutes.
