He has the following to say of one of I,a Grande's most popular young ladies who was . Tecently married here: We were- sur prised last Thursday morning while busily engaged in one of the runs of press day to have Mr. 'R. Alspaugh, of Eagle Creek, come in and inform us that someone wished to see us. On going out to his car, we saw his" new daughter-in-law, the bride of his son Ernest Lewis Alspaugh. We would have been more astonished if we had not just 'received the announcement of their nuptials. We have known the bride, who was Miss Dora Van Fleet, for many years in Ln Grande, from the time when she ran around with her hair down in a long braid. It was n great pleasure nnd we felt it an honor, that she stopped to se us. Our hands wore black with printer's ink, but she insisted on shaking them nev ertheless. The groom is to be heart ily congratulated fop winning such a charming prize for his matrimonial career', and we charge him solemnly to love and cherish her so she will never regret her giving herself to ' him. The young couple will make their future home at The Dalles. ' Miss Zella Elizabeth Switzer, daughter of Mr. nnd Mrs. J. K. Swit zer, and Robert Dane, of East End, Saskatchewan, will be united in mar riage in a pretty home wedding at the family residence, 00(i Pennsylvan ia cvenue, this evening at 10 o'clock, liev. N. Sherman Hawk, of the M. E. . Church, will -officiate. Only relatives and a very few intimate friends of the bride will be present. Preceding he ceremony, Stuart Bennett will sing ''Because I Love You." Mi?s Enid Switzer, sister of the bride, will apt as bridesmaid. Dressed in pink, she will carry a bouquet of pink and white sweet peas. The bride's dress will be of white georgette, satin and lace and her veil will be caught with .real orange blossoms. The bride's bouquet will be of pink rose's. Ed ward Keckritz, of Union, will attend the groom. After a wedding supper, the young couple will have on a honeymoon to Portland, Seaside, Spo kane and Glacier Park. They will make their future home in. East End, Saskatchewan, where Mr. Dane is en gaged in the mcmiiili! business, fc. i Miss Bessie May Ellsworth, of I.a Grande, and Hetlry Tieper, of Sum nicrville, were united in marriage, Wednesday afternoon nt 4 o'clock at the M. Complimenting Miss Zella Switzer, bride elect, tlie Misses Sarah and Mi riam Smith entertained three tables of five hundred most delightfully on Friday evening. Lovely white nnd pink sweet peas decked the rooms. High honors at cards went to Mrs. H. E. Dixon nnd the honor guest, Miss Switzer. Those enjoying the Misses Smiths' hospitality were the Misses Zelln and Enid Switzer, Hilda An thony, R-una Bacon, Ruth Ghormley, Carol Currey and Mesdnmes Gus Levy, II. E. Dixon, James Bennett, L. j. Bennett, W. D. McMillan nnd Lowell Williamson. Light . refresh ments were served at the close of the evening. Mr. and Mrs. Dnvid Ii. Hill are planning to leave here tomorrow ev ening for Hot Lake, where they will be guests of Dr. William Phy, pro prietor and manager of the resort. They expert to spend the night nt Dr. Phy's cabin in the mountains, nnd on Saturday will return to Hot Lnke and join Dr. Ray Murphy, and as his guests will go for a trip to Wallowa lake and Salmon river. Dr. nnd Mrs. Hill expect to return here Monday night. Pendleton Tribune. ' A number of friends surprised Mrs. C. L. Scott Inst Sunday by bringing their lunch baskets nnd helping her celebrate her birthday wiih a picnic dinner and supper, thus making the day a most enjoyable one. , Those present were Mr. nnd Mrs. West nnd four sons, of Montana, Mr. and Mrs.. Mr. Hampton, who is su perintendent of schools in his home city, goes to Portland and Salem on school business and' will return here Sunday, the party returning home that evening. After the gifts had been showered on Miss Burnett, among which there were many beautiful and useful presents, refreshments were served. Miss Burnett is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. B. P. Burnett, of Island City, and will be married on August 24 to Otto Pieber, formerly of La Grande but now of Stnrkey. Those present nt the shower were the Misses Lois and Virginia Bryant, Letn Kiddle, Ella Milenburg, Ivorene Smith, Ruth Whittnore, Rula and Jean Smith, and Mesdnmes Nellie Smith, Lee Smith, Dolly Smith, Maud Bos quet and W. S. Burnett, of La Grande. - An enjoyable picnic party was held at the Jerry Veach home at the foot of Mt. Emily, Tuesday evening when several auto loads of townspeople londed up their baskets and- motored to the cold spring on the Veach place to cook their supper and spend the evening. Those who composed the merry party were Mr. and Mrs. Jim McKenzie, Mr. nnd Mrs. P. A. Mc Donald nnd daughter, Helen, Mr. nnd Mrs. Jerry Veach nnd daughter, Joy, Mr. Alex Campbell and son, Byron, and daughter, Naomi, and the Misses Mary, Chrystic, Kate, Belle and Etta Campbell. The floor of Rex hnll was crowded with dancers Thursday evening when the Musicians' union gave their dance. Good music throughout the evening, furnished by two orchestras, one strik- j ing up when the other stopped, callei j forth the dancing spirit in everyone, j and all enjoyed themselves to the ut most until a late hour. Honoring Mr. nnd Mrs. E. W. Bow er, of Salt Lake City, Mr. nnd Mrs. L. B. Larsen entertained nt a delight ful dancing pnrty on Saturday even ing, August 1G. Twelve couples en joyed Mr. anil Mrs. Lnrsen's hospital ity and light refreshment wero serv ed at the close of the evening. Complimenting Mrs. George Cur rey, who Ih visiting hero from Vale, Miss Helen Currey entertained a few friends on Friday afternoon. The afternoon .was spent In needlework after which appropriate rolroshnionts wore serv-ed. Mrs. Fred Kiddle delightfully en tertained the Bridge Chin at her Isl and City home on Thursday after noon. Mrs. W. .R. Jones .received high honors.
