He admits thut the plain tiff was a splendid wife to him and worked hard, and he slates that he has tiled Bevera'l times to persuade her to return to him, having tried three or four times since she made application for divorce to reconcile her. A bevy of witnesses, most of thera women, and neighbors at ono time of the couple, are In attendance at the trial to bear out the plaintiff's contention of inhuman treatment. The husband admits having struck the plaintiff once with his open hand, but denies that tho testimony of witnesses that from al distance they saw him kick her is true. His wife, he says, has admitted to him that she Is not sure whether or not he is the father of one of the children. China Pheasant Hangs From Wire. Stellman, also of this city, is being tried before Circuit Judge Knowles today, R. J. Green ap pearing for the defendant and J. D. Slater for the plalnt(lff. The lease appears to be rather complicated. Tho plaintiff testified this morning that Btellman married her when he had another wife living, whom he had left but had never divorced. She did not discover the fact until several years after she had married the de fendant and then she refused to live with him as wife unfXl Stellman should secure a divorce and have the marriarge ceremony with the plain tiff repeated. Steilinan, liowevjr-bc ' came so abusive, she asserted, that sho refused to have anything more to do with him. Ho left her in December 1917, and did not return nor send any money to lier tr.eroaftor, but he returned last Spring and tried to ef fect a settlement. Sho had supported tho children meanwhile. Several wit nesses were calld this morning for th ipluintiff whos opinion expressed during questioning by the attorneys was anything but flattering to the defendant. A tangle on legal ques tions involved Is anticipated by the court, the seeming status of the case being that Mrs. Stellman's marriage to Stellman Is void because of the ex istence of Stollimin's former marriage and the fact that his first wife was atlll legally his wife.
