For a time it looked ns if the buffa
lo were destined to vnnfoh from Amur
ira. The few roaming wild were
Krowing fewer year by year, and thn
amul) herdji in enptivity were decrens -ing.
Then the government took thn
mattor in hnnd and made a deliberate
effort to save the species from exler
niiiiatlon.
The firitt buffalo census was taken
In 18811, and nt that time only about-
600 of the animals were discoverable
tn tho United Stntes. Now, happily,
the number is more than 3000. About.
two-thirds of these uro owned by In
dividuals, but the government owns
eight herds, six of them under the
direct Control of tho Department of
Agriculture. The largest of the eight
is that one In Yellowstone Purk which
contains about 450 buffalo. Tho
Smithsonian Institution has a herd of

Recently provision has boon made
for lending government anlmalo to
municipalities or Institutions, or ex

surplus in some of tho government
