A great deal of nonsense, fnvnrnMn and unfavorable, has been written about the proposed visit of the I'rinct; of Wales to this country. Nearly all the speculation rpRti riling the social aspect of the visit of the Prince, the requirements of precedent, . the people who will be permitted to meet him or entertain him, the society buds who will exhibit their charms in his royal presence, etc., may be swept aside ns silly. There is, unfortunate ly, much toadyism latent in certain strata of American society; hut that U not the dominant spirit of the mv thin, and has nothing to do with the purpose and spirit with which the Prince ifl coming and with which he will be regarded by the American peo pie ns a whole. Just as silly Is the critical and even scurrilous comment emanating from some of the professional Angtophoben or riritish-baiters In the United States, who use the Prince ns a text for n new series of diatribes against the llritlnh empiro nnd people. A favorite device of these critics is to "damn With faint praise." Edward is described patronizingly as 'a nice boy," personally likable nnd commend' able. Between the lines is the impli cation that ns the prospective ruler of the British empiro he Is but a sorry spectacle, and that any nation that will even pretend to be ruled by such a commonplace individual is absurd nnd undemocratic. The fact is that the king-emperor, "who is now (leorge and will eventually j be Edward, is literally the "king pin" that holds tho British empire togeth er. That empire is a great aggrega tion of democratic nnd virtually in dependent nations. Without the im perial crown, they would fall apart. Making an exception of 1 1 eland, it may be said truly that in the present stnge of affairs, such disintegration would he a lamentable thing for the world. Politically, George is, and Edward will be, little more than n symbol of, unity. Hut there is nothing on earth more powerful than symbols. Viewed in that aspect alone, the American government and American people may well Hi a respectful and friendly greeting to th s representative of the British government and the llriti.di people.
