open to boys who want scientific

water, or that they should not water
their lawns or gardens, as a well-kept i
lawn is a pride to the average home
owner and the products of his garden
is a help in lowering the high cost of
living to every man who keeps a little
home garden.' If this city was situat
ed' in the midst of an arid desert and
it was necessary to haul in all the
water that was used, there might be
some excuse tor stating that a smaller
amount of water should be used. But
situated in the heart of the Blue Moun
tains entirely surrounded by high
mountains covered with perpetual
snow, with springs and streams by
the thousands in every direction, there
is no excuse for the City of La
Grande being put under the necessity
of pumping from the (Jrande Ronde
river. The present supply of water
coming partly from the Grande Ronde
river has already caused an epidemic :
of sickness in the city and while as
yet it has not been serious, that is no
reason to state that it might not be
come serious. The pumping of the
river water throuRh all of the chlori
nation plants that could be piled up
is not a solution to the question, for
chlorination plants break down, as has
