bors who just "drop in" for a Rame of five
hundred; it is then that one hastily reorgan
izes one's self, looks on the brighter side ot
existence and rejoices when his hand shows

Such was the program of the writer Thurs
day evening. The five hundred game was go
ing good,, everybody was in the hole and
tickled to pieces because of the fact; they
were bidding like high-grade miners at Tono
.pah, never thinking or caring of final scores.
Kvery baud was a game, just as X. K.A est
used to announce with considerable pride at
the county fair that every heat would be a
race.
Anotlu'rliand was dealt and such a hand,
three aces, a couple of jacks, with two kings
and a iucen. it looked like a winner and
.Mabel's bid indicated that her hand would
swell the victory, to a "sweep" and then,
what happened
Looking toward the door of our home we
saw the venerable old A. J. Martin, 0.-W.
store-keeper, and at the same instant the 0.
W. band ol" forty-eight pieces broke . forth
with its best selection. 10 very card fell to the
floor no more cards not then.
For an hour we all enjoyed the sere
nade so generously given by this band which
has won its spurs as a decided factor ill Union
county's life. Manager Ifidenaur was in high
glee, and from his heart, he uttered the senti
ment of the entire band in his greeting speech
for the whole program was an entire surprise
to the writer. It was planned to show the
band's appreciation of the part The. Observer
took in opening a subscription list so that La
(Irande people could contribute to purchase
uniforms for the organization.
After the s'econd selection the band entered
our home and we had real music the kind
that makes 1he spinal column chase itself it)
anil down for quite a while. Director Cald
well seemed to have about every piece of. mu
sic on tap worth having and we listened to
Suiisa and the rest of the big composers. Af
ter a U'ood, old-time visit, touched up by a
black ir.'ickmaii cigar, the half hundred musi
cians batle us good night and good luck, leav
ing us to ponder over the pleasantries of life.
The. occasion was refreshing beyond descrip
tion. It brought to our mind the words "grat
itude'' and 'appreciation." Some people
think these words have long since died, but
they have not. For the small part The Ob
server and its force played in starting the
uniform fund and for the large part La
(irande people had in subscribing to that
fund every member of the band is profound
ly grateful, as the event of Thursday night
thoroughly demonstrated. The uniforms are
fine. The manager made a good selection of
material find style. Henceforth the O.-W.
band, will appear in public dressed as it
should be dressed, and the public will be
proud of the organization's appearam-e, as
well as of its excellent music.
In closing this little story of n delight I'ul,
pleasant evening it is not ,,'ut of place' for us
