Tuat La Grande is now definitely
assured of having another week's
Chautauqua entertainment this sum
mer was announced by Geo. Coch
rane, treasurer and a director of
the local Chntitnuqun Association
on. his return from Portland yester
day. This is good news to the peo
ple ot La Cr-uide. who had been
made to doubt for a time whether
Vhis popular event would be repeat
ed at the park ngn'm, this summer.
Mr. Cochrane statc Hint while in
Portland he siniied up again with
the Ellison-While .bureau, whose
programs have proved so satisfac
tory here In the pa it, and Kllison
W'hlte have given out n tentative list
of their Chaiit iuqiia people who will
appear here.
The opening date, according to
the first ilralt, will be Suturday,
July 5th, and It Is thought likely
that thole wiH be no chaniio in this
date.
The opening will he by the Mc-Donoilgll-E'ickslo'ii'
Company, two
bright yonng Indies who liavo put it
over with a bright, snappy, attrac
tive program, considered an ideal
opening program of music and enter
tainment. They will be followed by
one of, tile best lecturers of the week,
Dr. Joseph Ckre, late of London and
Fetrogr.id. Dr. Clnre was for -five
years preceding 1917 pastor of tho
largest English speaking church con
gregations in Petrograd and wont
through the revolution. He has a
keenly interesting, human interest
story.
On the -second day the Fllllon con
cert party will appear in the after
noon and for the evening prelude.
In the afternoon, also, Dr. A. D.
Carpenter will lecture on "Worlds
in the Making." Dr. Carpenter is
well known as a successful Chautau
qua speaker. In the evening ot the
second day Edward S. Treft will
speak on reconstruction. Trefz
was the organizer and the .first
secretary of the United Chambers of
Commerce a.nd was regarded as a
mighty big man.- . Tacoma recently
paid him J750 for three days Xo ad
vico with their Clumber of Com
merce. Tho third (lay there will be a lec
ture on European reconstruction by
a sister of George 1 itch, tho author,
and the afternoon program-will ln
cludo the Lewis Military Quartote,
a company picked by. a master of
music from the forty thousand men
ot Camp Lewis this year. Dr. El
liott A. Boyle, with an inspirational
lecture, and Edwin S. Whitney, with
his reading, "Turn to the Right,"
will also appear the third day of tho
Chautauqua.
Tho fourth day will Include a lec
ture by XJis. McCredie, an afternoon
recital by the Recital Artists com
pany and nnotherenterti.iinment by
Elsie Mae Gordon. Miss Gordon is
heralded as a surprise. In the eve-
. ntng Mary Ailel Hays, the New York
coloratura soprano, ussisted by tile
Recital Artists, will appear, nr.d Miss
Ida M. Tarbell. the noted writer and
lecturer will spek.

Mrs. Henry Struve and Mrs. Eva
Stevens, of Fendleton, are tho guests
of Mrs. Henry Hill, of tills city.
They arrived from Fendleton this
morning. .
Mrs. Frank Carter and Mrs. S. W.
Coulter, of Emmett, Idaho, were in
La Grunde for a short time today.
They want on to Enterprise, where
they will visit friends.
R. B. and Fred C. . Hamilton of
Suminerville, were In La Grande to
day. They were on their way to
North Powder and left for that place
at noon, to look after business Inter
ests In the Powder country.
Hurry Stoker, who has heea. nine
teen months iu Uncle S.im's service
was In town today on his way to his
home nt Union. - He arrived yester
day from Camp Lewis, where he re
ceived his discharge.

in La Grande today on his way home
from Spokane. Mr. Crouch, who re
ceived his dischnrgo from the army
in December, paid a brief visit to
liis uncle, County Assessor U. G
Couch, while here.
J. 1). McKeunnoii returned this
moi'.riing from Portland, where he
had beeu for a few days In attend
ance at the meeting of the League
to Enforce Peace. He enjoyed very
mucli the three addresses by ex-Pres-Ident
Talft, which iie heard, ho says.
Cecil R. Anderson, a Summorrille
soldier who hod been at Camp
Meade, Mil., was in La Grande this
mornil-.g on his way home. He ar
rived last night from Camp Lewis,
where he bad been sent for demobi
lization, i
L. J. Mel'it-B, of bumnierville, who
left Camp Lewis Monday with his
discharge, after seven, months in the
service, spent a short time In La
Grande today on his way home. Mr.
Meiers had been at various camps,
Freemont, Mills and Lee.
Don Sargent, who braved the bat
tles in France and got back to this
country without a scratch or a sick
day, was . unfortunate enough to
take the flu at Camp Lewis, just be
foro he was ordered home. Word to
his father, W. B. Sargent, indicates
that he is not seriously ill, however.
Goofge C. Cross, of Elgin, is a re
turning soldier who passed through
this city this morning on 1)Ib way
hoiue from Camp Lewis, where he re
ceived his discharge. Ho had been
seven months in the service, and
trained at various camps In the
United States. Ho. was at Cainp
Mills, Long Island; when the war
concluded, aj.?d ho says they were
ready om different occasions to 0111
bark for overseas when their sail
ing orders were cancelled.
