(Special) Don Myers of Elgin shipped a carload of hogs from the local stockyards Satur day. F..L. Hill of Haines. Ore., tuna in Imbler Monday, transferring the Spo-j mire cream station from Harry San ' derson to Tom Wiggans. Roy Morris and mother were in La Grande Saturday. Mrs. Charles Cleaver visited with friends in La Grande this week. Miss Anna Brooks entertained n number of friends at her home near Imbler at dinner Friday evening. A very delicious spread was set before the guests. Miss Anna knows by this time just how to entertain her friends around Imbler. Those present wsrc: Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Hurley, Mrs. Bnlch, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Pratt and sons Milo and Floyd, Misses Edna and Effie Snider and Miss Williams. Mrs. Dora Childers is here visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. An drews. , Terry Tuttle, . better known as Grandpa Tuttle, who has resided on j Willow creek for so many years, is 1 very low at this writing. Darrell Larsen returned Monday from Camp Lewis, where he was hon ornbly discharged. The dance that was to have been given several weeks ago, but which was held up by the ban going on the city, will be given in the Imbler amusement hall Friday. February 7. A very pleasant time was spent Fri day evening at the home of Mr. and .Mrs. Charles Squires. Five hundred was the game of the evening and at a late hour delicious refreshments were served. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cassell and Mr. and Mis. Walter Stringham were guests of the evening. What was intended for a surprise party for Kellar Stringham last Fri day evening turned out to he a sur prise on the guests. It was his 21st birthday. Wilford Westenskow lias recovered from "pneumonia contracted on his! way home from Camp Meade, Md. George Ferguson visited with friends -in La Grande over Sunday. Miss Effie E. Martin of Imbler and Walter Young of 'La Grande were married in La Grande Saturday af ternoon at 4 o'clock. Miss JIartin is one of Imbler's popular young' ladies and has a host of friends who join in extending congratulations. Mr. Young " is a highly respected young man of j La Grande, where his wide circle of I friends wish him a long and happy wedded life. Mr. Young has a farm a f few miles east of Alicel, where the newly-weds expect to. make their i home. W. L. May has been very ill at his ! home east of Alicel. Volunteer Members Suggest That Pay Should Be Made Inducement Electrician Complains. Members of the volunteer fire bri gade appeared at the meeting of the board of city commissioners last night and requested that action be taken to provide a chief for the fire department succeeding Charles Murchison, who left the position the first of the monfh. Members of the volunteers have been taking turns at the fire hall the last few days, while the city manngcr has been endeavoring to secure the . ser vices of a new chief. The city manager, John Collier, stated that he had a man in sight, but he was at Camp Lewis an had not yet jbeen able to secure his discharge. He therefore appointed Lot Snotlgrass to net as chief temporarily. The volunteer members also urged unon the commission tfiat tbev nav their fir0 clli(,f a sufficient salary to in5Ure tnat when they got a good man in the position they would be able to keep him. It was hinted that the late chief would have remained had a rea sonable wage advance been offered him.
