SEF.LEY HERE Head of State Board of Health Visit ing La Grande Today. "Of course I know Jack needs to" go te school and he' pretty young to work, but we need tho money," said a mother today when she was talking things over with a member of the school welfare committee. It is for just such children as Jack and hund reds of others who pre working bo cause living is high and wage3 good, that tho Child Conservation section and the Children's Bureau, U. S. Do partment fo Labor, i-turted the buck-to-school drive. In tho eyes of the president and his cabinet, rcturnh'tT to the schools those children who have- left t'a: early is an important piece of work, and as good an invest ment for the futuro as Liberty bonus In a letter to Secretary Lane, Prerldut t Wtlson says: "Tho mainienance o' ' the schools is a matter of the very affecting both our strength in war, and our nation al welfare and efficiency when the war is over tlwrs will be ur gent need not only for trained lead ership in a.l lines of industrial commercial, soei.il, sr.d civic life. but for 'a very high overage of Inlet ligence and preparation on ih.t part of all the people. 1 would t':ore fore urge that tho people continue to give generous support to the schools of ull grades ." Since the opening of the fall school term, the Children's Bureau h 's made a series .of quick surveys in industrial nnd commercial centers which have shown that large num bers of children livao left school for work, and further that the children are not doing the kind of work which gives them training now, or much hope of further development. To combat this situation the back-to-school drive was organized. The right education of the children is the best preparedness for national strength In time, of peace. As a real piece of reconstruction work the at women of the local Ulinu vienare I committees of the Council of Nation al Defense have taken up tho back- to-school drive. They tilk to the children and of U13 children's par ents In an effort to keep the children from leaving the schools premature ly. Financial assistance in the form of scholarships will be given many of the children who can not afford to stay in school; the Red Cross will help others who hare close relatives still In the service. The. country Is determined . that when "Johnnie comes inarching hinre" he shall find his smaller brothers and sisters equipped to 00 their work us well in Industry as he did his In the army.
