Francis Carbine arrived this morn ing with a discharge from Uncle Sam's service. He was at Long Island pre pared to go across at the signing of the armistice. He is the first one of twenty-three from this locality to reach home for good. paper before it reached the judge. That the opinion of Mr. Slater is not shared is apparent from the fren zied feeling of u large portion of La Grunde and surrounding country who justly feel that the siltintion which. vitally infects -all in this city has been handled in tho most bungling and inefficient manner. After hearing tho argument Judge HELP WANTED FOR NEEDY INFLUENZA SUFFERERS It is the belief that there is a lot of hardship existing in the city in homes where the influenza epidemic has stricken down sever al members of the fumily. rt Is the sincere desire of the able peo ple here to help those w ho are not able to care for themselves or render proper aid to their sick, but they are handicapped to a great extent by luck of knowledge regarding places in which they might carry on their work of love and mercy. The local advisory war board has directed its attention to this matter and today issued the fol lowing appeal to the captains in the ninety-one divisions into which the city is divided: NOTICE TO TEAM CAPTAINS. All team captains and workers of PI suing Out Sale OF THE GOLDEN RULE COMPANY'S STORE We told you we were going .to give you the greatest bargain event ever witnessed in La Grande. By the number of people visiting our sale last Saturday, you know we made good. If you failed to visit our store on this date, by all means take advantage of this great sale immediately, because soon the good things will be gone, for we expect to close our doors for good within a very short time. We quote below just a few of the many wonderful bargains offered you, and there are thousands of others just as good the store is fairly ablaze with attractive bargains. and the case will be heurd luter on its merits. Let Hate and Malice Enter Not. '"Dick" Buckley, who matched himself against the flu and finally gave It the knockout, has returned from California und Ie now back at his desk In the Wd's Fargo build ing In Portland. Dick says, "Cali fornia is the home of the flu .and .there are a hundred cases to one in Oregon. I was in San Diego, for there Is less of it there than else where In California. Dr. Molltor, formerly of La Grande, assured it was subsiding nnd it If. probably due to the masks which are religiously worn by all the people ot San Dlego. .Yes, I wore one, just a plain one without any lace on It and maybe you think I didn't look like a six-icon-yeir-old girl ready for the neighborhood dunce. Cut It Is sur prising how soon one gels used o the mask. I got. so it us us nec essnry as a pair of suspenders. Speaking from the standpoint of one who has had It 1 would say tho flu mask is the best regulation yet ot fered to combat the disease." Andorson dissolved the Injunction .the La Grande district of th.i advisory wsr board are called to duty in a liu- nianitnriun plun to relieve suffering. ( Alii) OF THANKS La Grande is in a state of un rest and dissatisfaction over the closing program which the city has been under nnd which may again be adopted. While it is true the recommendation of Stute Health Officer Secley and the recommen dation of La'Graiule physicians as well, was not heeded, yet it ii doubtful if drastic retaliatory measures are justifiable. In uny event the people ' should not let hate nor mniico nor former per sonal grudges enter into what they do in a public way. The welfare of La Grande und community is the thing to consid er. That public health conies first there is not shadow of doubt, but wisdom should prompt reasonable action by those in authority and ithnt wisdom can be obtained from honorable advisors who have al ready spoken. This being true, it is sheer folly to attempt to put over restrictions which learned professional men say are unneces sary nnd useless, especially when those restrictions keep the city in the atmosphere of uncertainty as to whether business districts will be opened or closed at the will and desire of a. single person or a few persons. What La Grande needs is unity of purpose and the way to get that is through sincere ei'lort along sane lines, eliniinnting all heated conversation and revengeful talk.
