Last March 300,000 acres of agricultural lands in the Reselling district were disposed of to hemesteaders and in the same month about 150,000 acres were sold to set tlers in the Portland district Consolidate Timber Tracts, Urged. Kefernnpr to the timbered areas in the railroad grant lands and efforts to form them into compact bodies, Commissioner Tallman's report says: "As the grant to the company was of odd-numbered sections, and it had, prior to the act of revestment, sold some of the granted titles to lumber companies and others, who also held the titles to the even-numbered aec . tions, it follows that the United States how has title to the revested odd-numbered sections, while the title to the even-numbered sections sold prior to July 1, 193, is now in pri vate ownership.- This scattered hold ing of timber lands by the United States seriously interferes with the advantageous disposition of the tim ber, for the Reason that the lands ore fer the greater Dart rough and moun tainous, calling for a heavy initial out lay before successful logging opera tions can be set on foot, as well as a corresponding expenditure to maintain such operations. "Therefore successful operations in this region call for the ownership of timberlnnds in large bodies, and the prices paid for timber will be to a large degree affected by the possibili ties of thus blocking uo timberlnnds for future operations.
